FUNSO BANJO lost his unbeaten record and a chance to
make himself a name on the other side of the Atlantic
when he was outpointed by Marvis Frazier over 10
scrambling rounds at Alexandra Pavilion.
BARRY McGUIGAN makes his first defence of the
British featherweight title after the long interval of 20
months when he meets official challenger Clyde Ruan over
12 rounds at the Ulster Hall. Belfast, on Wednesday,
writes TIM MO. McGuigan's European title is automatically
involved.
ACTON'S Rocky Kelly, the Southern Area welterweight
champion, tops the bill in a Mickey Duff/Mike Barrett
promotion which revives boxing at Wembley Conference
Centre tonight (Friday).
Duff and Barrett used to run regular shows here but this
will be the first time that the venue has been used for
several years. Kelly faces the experienced Belgian welterweight
champion from Ostend. Frankie Decaestecker over
10 rounds.
CANADA'S Olympic silver medallists Shawn O'Sullivan
and Willie de Wit delivered a one-two punch on successive
nights with second round wins. But there the similarity
ends.
The fans at Halifax in the east coast province of Nova
Scotia were thrilled as O'Sullivan smashed in big rights to '
stop respected young journeymap Charlie Smith, from
Washington DC. in the second.
T O win a British title is a considerable achievement; to
win it in a contest hailed as Britain's Fight of The Year
is even more praiseworthy.
Yet new British light-welterweight champion Terry
Marsh not only managed to do both these things, he did
them just 36 hours after finishing a night shift in his
regular j o b as a fireman!
FOREST EDGE ABC enjoyed a sell-out when
they staged a tournament at the Appledore
Recreation Centre, on the edge of the New
Forest, near Southampton.
Highlight of the evening was the contest in
which local lad Steve McCarthy took on the more
experienced Sammy Small from Fareham and
gained an upset points decision, after a tough
battle which had the referee congratulating both
boxers.
