PAT COWDELL became the first British boxer to
be a double European champion since Ted "Kid"
Lewis, and simultaneously put himself right in line
for a world title fight in September, when he
unanimously outpointed European juniorlightweight
champion Jean-Marc Renard of Belgium
over 12 rounds at the Aston Villa Sports and Leisure
Centre.
THERE was an exciting eight (three minute)
rounder featuring Tony Willis who came back from
the brink of disaster to pound out a win over
Winston Spencer in the sixth round.
Willis had been badly stunned in the second,
dragged to the canvas and, at one point, looked
three punches from defeat. Yet the manner in which
he hoisted his way back into the fight and put
together his finishing volley was magnificent.
HARD-HITTING Sylvester Mittee keeps the momentum
of his welterweight comeback going with a 10-rounder
against American veteran Floyd Mayweather on a Saturday
afternoon show at the Bloomsbury Crest Hotel,
tomorrow (July 14). The show is being staged, officially,
by Ernie Fossey because the original promoter, Mittee's
new manager Frank Warren, has had his quota of TV
dates.
TIM WITHERSPOON defends his WBC heavyweight title
against the undefeated PINKLON THOMAS at Las Vegas
on August 31, it was announced by promoter Don King last
week. The fight will be televised by Home Box Office in
America.
