BARRY McGUIGAN is still firmly on course for a
world title chance — but a less honest opponent than
Charm Chiteule, or a less tolerant referee than Roland
Dakin, might have forced him to make a detour.
The gallant Zambian finally wilted in the 10th of a
gruelling 12-rounds final eliminator for the Commonwealth
featherweight title, but he had been hit
low frequently as McGuigan, his right eye bloodshot
and swollen, flirted with disqualification

BALLYMENA light-welter GARY "PEPPY" MUIR
lost his unbeaten record third time up when he was
forced to retire at the end of the sixth against the much
more experienced KEVIN PRITCHARD of Liverpool.

DAVID PEARCE must have been surprised at the unexpected
end to his scheduled 10 (three minute) rounder
against Miami's JACK JOHNSON: after four quite combative
rounds, Johnson took a clip on the jaw, bumped
heads and turned away to prompt the intervention of referee
Paul Thomas (officiating throughout) at the Victoria Hall

THE ambition of challenger Dennis Andries proved too
much for the skills of champion Tom Collins, who lost his
British light-heavyweight title via an undisputed verdict at
the Lyceum.
Referee Harry Gibbs had no hesitation in raising Andries'
hand after 12 slow and rather uneventful rounds, to make
the Hackney challenger British champion at the third attempt
(he lost verdicts to Bunny Johnson in 1980 and Collins
in 1982). Collins lost the title after a reign of just under
two years, and two successful defences.

ON THE evidence of his fifth-round defeat of veteran
American Ralph Moncrief, British and Commonwealth
middleweight champion Mark Kaylor is
ready for a move into world class.
Kaylor flattened the 33-year-old lay preacher from
Cleveland with a wicked short right, with a following
left hook for insurance. Moncrief s head crashed sickeningly
against the ring boards directly above me, and
referee Sid Nathan immediately signalled the end
without bothering to take up a count.
