EVANDER HOLYFIELD ' S off to a good start in his heavyweight
campaign, but with reservations.
Hammering a ringworn James Not-So-Quick Tillis d o e s n ' t prove much.
But Holyfield's p e r f o r m a n c e suggests that he does at least belong with the
t o p heavyweights.
He couldn't floor Tillis, but he systematically broke him up. It was a
p e r f o r m a n c e that leads one to believe he can indeed become a viable
opponent for champ Mike Tyson. But, it must be said, not, at this stage
anyway, one who can beat him.

THE way Simon Brown destroyed Jorge Vaca makes you
wonder how on earth the Mexican journeyman ever
managed to give Lloyd Honeyghan so much trouble (in fact
the first fight, anyway)
Maybe Honey softened up Vaca, but the Mexican looked
a "shot" fighter as he went down six times in his third round
loss to Brown, televised by the CBS network from
Kingston, Jamaica.

S U G A R RAY L E O N A R D looks certain to make a ring
r e t u r n against Canadian Donny Lalonde in a bout that
would involve t w o world titles and could put the American
in the record books as t h e first five-time champion.
The plan is f o r New York-based Lalonde t o defend his
World Boxing Council light-heavyweight title in a fight that
would be made at 12 s t o n e so it could also be f o r t h e WBC's
new super-middleweight title.

LOCAL favourite Tony "The Tiger" Lopez came off
the floor to c a p t u r e the I B F super featherweight title as
he won a bloody, unanimous 12-round decision victory
over Rocky Lockridge b e f o r e a roaring crowd of nearly
11,000 at the Arco Arena.

RECORD BREAKER John Lyon
has received £5,000 towards the
cost of his 'final training' for the
Olympic Games in Seoul.
This cash bonus comes just a
couple of weeks after the news that
one of Lyon's team-mates,
heavyweight Henry Akinwande,
would lose his unemployment benefit
while he was representing his
country in Korea.

DAVE McCAULEY has not retired . . . despite what a
Sunday newspaper says! The former British flyweight
champion from Belfast was said to have quit the ring — but
insisted to Boxing News this week that this was not so.
