NORWEGIAN heavyweight Steffen Tangstad catches Joe Bugner with a right in
their clash at Copenhagen in 1984, won by Tangstad on points. His last fight was a
four round stoppage defeat to Michael Spinks for the IBF heavyweight title in
September 1986, but despite his inactivity the EBU have nominated him as official
challenger.

A FEW parting words on Michael Spinks, who sensibly
retired at the age of 31. After his blowout by Mike Tyson I
suppose there was no point in him continuing, now that he's
financially secure, although he could have made excellent
money. A fight between Spinks and Evander Holyfield, for
instance, would have been interesting.

WILFREDO GOMEZ looked slow, wide in the body, in his
lightweight comeback against Mexican MARIO GONZALEZ
at Miami — but the Puerto Rican former triple world champ can
still punch.
And when he got into this rhythm and started letting his
punches fly, he didn't look at all had for a 31-vear-old.
Especially as he hadn't fought in more than two years and had to
come down in weight from around 13 stone.

S U G A R RAY L E O N A R D ' S attempt to become a fivetime
world champion was last week announced for Caesars
Palace, Las Vegas, on November 7 when he meets
Canadian Donny Lalonde with two championships at stake
just three days a f t e r his arch-rival Thomas Hearns bids
for his fifth crown in the sanfe city.

Stevie Cruz, the former WBA featherweight champion, retained
his Continental Americas title as he survived a rocky first round
to knock out white slugger Fred "Tank" Adams, of Detroit, in
the fourth of their scheduled 12-rounder.

A A R O N PRYOR, 32-year-old former world light-welter
champion, is coming back again. He meets Pat McWilliams,
a Canadian welterweight, on the same show as the
I B F welterweight title fight between Simon Brown and
Bobby Joe Young at Rochester, New York on September
23.
