GARY JACOBS makes the first defence of his Commonwealth
welterweight title on Tuesday (November 29) when he takes on
Zimbabwe's official challenger Richard Rova in the 12 round main
event at the Albert Hall,

BATTERSEA'S DERRICK WILLIAMS wisely
omitted himself from the British heavyweight title
eliminators and instead meets South Seas
heavyweight champion from Tonga, YOUNG
HAUMONA, for the vacant Commonwealth title
as the chief support to Jacobs-Rova. The crown
was relinquised by Horace Notice.

WITH the withdrawal of Jess Harding from the British heavyweight
title eliminators, Gary Mason now meets American veteran James
Tillis in the joint top-of-the-bill contest at the Elephant and Castle
Recreation Centre on Wednesday (November 30).
Tillis hasn't fought since he was stopped by undisputed cruiserweight
champion Evander Holyfield in five rounds in July.
He took a one-sided beating but stayed on his feet against a
younger, fitter and sharper opponent. At 31 and with over 50 fights in
a career spanning eight years, Tillis has little left to offer.

IAN BULLOCH, a 36-hour substitute for American
import Keith Vining, got a hero's reception from a
near-capacity City Hall crowd after holding Belfast lightheavyweight
Noel Magee to a gruelling ten-round draw.
Referee Harry Warner's decision of 98 points to each
man met with roars of disapproval from the crowd, who felt
Bulloch's aggression and consistent success with long rights
to the side of the head should have guaranteed him the
verdict.

WHAT you think of Sugar Ray Leonard's performance
against Donny Lalonde probably depends on what you
thought about the fight beforehand.
If you were of the opinion that Leonard would win easily,
which was the prevailing sentiment, then this fight was a
sure sign of deterioration. He got floored and had a lot of
trouble initially with an opponent not reckoned to be in his
class.

THE big ten days of boxing in Las Vegas, starting with the
CHAVEZ-RAMIREZ lightweight unification match, was indeed
a fight fan's dream. And all the shows were outstanding,
two at the Las Vegas Hilton and then LEONARD LALONDE
outdoors at Caesars Palace.

ROBERT HINES was tested positive for a
pain-killing drug after his win over Matthew
Hilton to become IBF light-middleweight champion
on November 4, the Nevada State Athletic
Commission said last week.
Hines was found to have taken the drug
lidocaine. Another fighter on the Las Vegas card,
James Kinchen. also tested positive for lidocaine
after his fight with Thomas Hearns, which he lost
on a split decision.

MANCHESTER southpaw DES GARGANO
survived a frantic last round to take referee
John Keane's 59'/2-58 points victory over old
foe RONNIE STEPHENSON in the six twos
featherweight top of the bill at the Holiday
Inn.
