WITH Britain's middleweight Big 3 of Graham, Benn and
Watson waiting in the wings there's perhaps more than
usual interest in Thursday's intriguing IBF title fight
between Frank Tate and Michael Nunn at Ceasars Palace,
Las Vegas.
The middleweights have traditionally been one of the
most exciting divisions and right now is no exception, both
in Britain and the States.

DONALD CURRY is a world champion again, but the evidence of his fight with
Gianfranco Rosi suggests that the Texas Cobra has indeed gone back. And I come to
this conclusion even though Curry surprised me by hammering Rosi to win the World
Boxing Council light-middle title outdoors at San Remo, shown same night
tape-delayed on America's ESPN TV network.

SIMON BROWN made a triumphant return
to his Jamaican homeland as he
retained his IBF welterweight title by
knocking down Mexico's Jorge Vaca, the
former World Boxing Council champion,
six times before stopping him in the third of
their scheduled 15-rounder.

EVANDER HOLYFIELD, the undefeated and undisputed
world cruiserweight champion, made an impressive
heavyweight debut as he hammered veteran James "Quick"
Tillis into defeat after five rounds in their scheduled
10-rounder outdoors at Caesars Tahoe hotel.
Tillis, 31, didn't go down but took a one-sided pounding.
At the end of the fifth he was checked over by the ringside
doctor in his corner and it was decided he should not come
out for the sixth. The official verdict was that referee
Richard Steele had stopped the fight on the doctor's advice
at the end of round five.

BIRKENHEAD junior Tony Tyrer collected the best boxer award
on his club's dinner show at the Hotel Victoria, New Brighton
when he notched a revenge points win over Mick Donaghue
(Salisbury). Feathers Dominic Jones (Birkenhead) and Andy Jones
(Willaston) got a standing ovation for a storming clash which
Dominic won on points while at superheavyweight Mike Naylor
(Merseyside Police) beat Mike Murphy (Weaverham) on a
stoppage after 75 seconds of the second round.
