COMMONWEALTH middleweight champion
Nigel Benn throws the first punches since his
row with manager Frank Warren, but promoters
Barrett, Maloney, and Marsh can't get either ITV
or BBC interested in the dynamic puncher's
defence against Anthony Logan of Jamaica at the
Albert Hall on Wednesday.
While Maloney complains of a closed shop and
favoured promoters, Benn talks of pursuing his
career, free of such problems, in Miami. Report p.
24.
MIDDLESBROUGH bantamweight Graham O'Malley
meets Glasgow's Donnie Hood in a 10-round British
title eliminator at Hartlepool Borough Hall on Tuesday.
Gus Robinson promotes, and the show will be screened on
ITV's Fight Night series.
IRISH light-middleweight champion Terry Magee is
battling, with frustration bordering on bitterness, for
the recognition he believes he deserves.
It's a common tale among fighters, but Magee feels
that in a six-year 'apprenticeship', he has more than
paid his dues, yet is constantly disregarded by the
'critics'.
TROUBLE, trouble . . . it's as if the three
witches have been cooking up evil portents for
heavyweight champ Mike Tyson. But, with his
split from Robin Givens and impending divorce,
the end to an unhappy chapter appears in sight.
THE Sugar Ray Leonard-Don Lalonde fight really has me
on a slow burn. As a fight it is quite interesting with
Leonard's skill against the more limited, but harder
punching Canadian, but as an exercise in jumping through
hoops it is one that must give any respecter of rules and
natural justice a pain in an unmentionable place.
