DAREN DYER pulled out a single right to the head to
dispose of outgunned Frenchman Jean Marc Phenieux in
the third of a scheduled eight-threes at the National
Sporting Club.
Phenieux (l0st 51b) stopped in his tracks, quivered for an
instant, and then crashed down heavily, face-first. Referee
Mike Jacobs promptly waved it off, without starting a
count, after 2 mins 14 sees of the session. Happily, the
Frenchman quickly recovered.

BELFASTS Sam Storey fought the fight of his lite to stop
Darren Hobson of Leeds one minute into the sixth round in
the Ulster Hall.
The former amateur international, brimming with confidence,
dominated the fight from start to finish.
Gone was the pedestrian and hesitant Storey of former
days. He was cool, sharp, dominant, calling all the shots on
a night he won't readily forget.

THINGS have worked out well for Potters
Bar heavyweight Jess Harding, who bides
time with a risky match against French
heavyweight champion Jean Chanet on a
Matchroom promotion at the Brentwood
Centre tonight (December 16).
Harding had been scheduled to meet Gary
Mason in an eliminator for the British title, which
would have taken place last month, but had to
withdraw with a damaged hand.
As a result of his withdrawal. Mason has been
matched against former champion Hughroy
Currie for the title, with Harding to meet the
winner.

THE WBC may have benefited fiscally from the Sugar Ray
Leonard — Don Lalonde fight, but there was also a negative
reaction. The decision to recognise the fight as also being
for the light-heavyweight title was widely criticised and
Leonard made a mockery of it all by promptly relinquishing
both titles. His eventual retention of the supermiddleweight
crown is just a gesture to save the WBC from
total embarrassment, and he obviously has no plans to
defend it.
