THE strange lethargy that has blighted Tom
Collins' career struck again, probably with
dire consequences, as he lost his European
light-heavyweight title to Dutch stringbean
Pedro van Raamsdonk, writes BOB MEE.
Collins, on the brink of a world title fight
for so long, drifted around the ring as if this
was a meaningless ten-rounder until the
first punch of round seven, a slashing right
hand, ripped open his left eyebrow.

THERE was an unfortunate ending to George Collins' welterweight contest
against substitute opponent Juan Rondon of Venezuela when the South American
was stopped on a cut after two minutes three seconds of the fifth of their scheduled
eight threes.

VIRGIL HILL is WBA light-heavyweight
champion, but it must be a mistake! It was never
intended that Virgil should actually win a world
title, or any major title.
The gods who decide such things had it all
planned out. He was one of those poor
unfortunates to whom they gave just enough
ability to get close to the big prize, and then
would have it snatched out of his hands at the
last moment.

IF Britain is to maintain its record of having won at least one
medal at every Olympics since 1968, then Henry Akinwande is
the man most likely to do it.
The heavyweights are likely to have a relatively small number
of entrants—just 16 in the last world championships. 12 in the
last Europeans — and with a bye or an easy draw, Henry could
soon be on the threshold of the medal stages.
But even without a helpful draw, Henry has the talent to go a
long way. At 6 feet 6 inches tall, and with very long arms, he has
the ability to pick off his opponents with jabs and catch them
with solid shots if they come in close.

Herol Graham and
flyweight Dave McAuley
have entered into a bitter
public row with their
manager, Belfast's B.J.
Eastwood, after they
aired their dissatisfaction
in a national Sunday
newspaper.
