PROSPECTIVE Tyson challenger Carl "The Truth" Williams
showed grit as he overcame a cut over the right eye to outpoint
Trevor Berbick on the big bill at Atlantic City.
Indeed, Wallace Matthews of New York's Newsday
revealed that Williams went into the fight with cut over the
right eye, having suffered the injury on his last day of sparring.
It was disguised by surgical sealer and some make-up to get
him through the New Jersey commission pre-fight physical.
The Williams camp took a calculated gamble. But he boxed
and jabbed well enougth to control the first six rounds and the
eye held up until the seventh.
FORMER world welterweight champion Donald Curry
floored Italy's Gianfranco Rosi five times as he hammered
him into defeat on a corner retirement after nine rounds to
win the World Boxing Council light-middleweight title.
But Curry suffered a cut over the right eye and a smaller
cut over the left eye in what was a gruelling fight despite the
dominance of the challenger from Fort Worth, Texas.
Referee Octavio Meyran, of Mexico, issued a stream of
cautions to both fighters. Curry was told to keep his punches
up and watch his head, Rosi for holding behind the neck
and hitting on the break. But no points were deducted from
either fighter.
WINSTON BURNETT takes cover as middleweight prospect Nigel Benn goes on the
attack in their Albert Hall meeting last September. The Welshman is fast
approaching Ray Fallone's distinction of being the last British fighter to have
totalled 100 fights.
ST HELENS southpaw GARY STRETCH
finally gets his title opportunity when he
challenges GARY COOPER for the British
light-middleweight crown on September 7
at a venue yet to be decided.
