Hopkins' agenda
• MIDDLEWEIGHT king Bernard Hopkins has outlined
his plans.
He intends to defend his crown - for the 20th time -
against German Felix Sturm in January and then bow
out following a rematch with Felix Trinidad (still to be
negotiated, of course) next summer.
That's the deal agreed by Hopkins and cable
broadcasters HBO, who are not in the good books of
promoter Don King, who has Trinidad.
But King will no doubt be delighted to leam HBO is
interested in a Hopkins-Trinidad rematch because it gives
the promoter great bargaining power with the network.

Calling out Barney
• THE mention a few weeks ago in this column of
nobody in Britain being willing to box Matthew Barney
has led Neil Linford and Neil Simpson each to issue a
challenge.
Barney, though, is first to concentrate on a European
light-heavyweight title bid in Germany - postponed for
a few weeks - on November 6.
Linford floored and outpointed Barney in a British
super-middleweight title eliminator in September 2000
and said he'd fight Matthew again.
Simpson is set to return to action next month in
Coventry, not having boxed since losing on points to
Mark Brookes in an eliminator for the British title he
previously held.
At 34, Simpson realises he hasn't got long left in the
sport and has just signed a three-fight deal with
Shakespeare Promotions.

LUKE HOWKINS confirmed his
position as top super-heavy
in the Home Counties when
he unanimously outpointed
the hosts' COLIN GOLDHAWK
on Cheshunt ABC's Sunday afternoon
show at Grundy Park Leisure Centre.
The decision, after three excellent twominute
rounds, didn't go down well with some
of Goldhawk's supporters but there was no
cause for outrage.
Goldhawk produced plenty of movement
and certainly looked busy, but often he wasn't
punching - and if you're not punching, you're
not scoring.

• THE Lodge's ABA and Four
Nations light-fly king SCOTT
McDONALD was in attendance
and is looking forward to
starting the new season.
His first bout is against
former ABA champion JAMES
MULHERN (Standard Triumph)
on November 11 at the Stock
Exchange. The fight he's really
looking forward to is for
England on November 29.
"I can't wait to get back in
there," he said. "I haven't
boxed since winning the Four
Nations and want to prove
myself against America's
best, hopefully the Olympian
[RauShee Warren]."
