Jones-Trinidad?
• LOOKING ahead to all possibilities,
promoter Don King said that if Shane
Mosley fails to beat Ronald 'Winky'
Wright on March 13, Felix Trinidad will
make his comeback against Ricardo
Mayorga
Further down the line, King wants
Trinidad, if successful on the comeback
trail, to face Roy Jones in a fight he
believes could be worth in excess of
$150m - but that's Don King talk.
Trinidad-Mayorga would happen at
middleweight but Felix would have to
move up two divisions to make a match
against Jones possible.
I don't see it happening. Jones is not
only too big, but too fast and skilful.
Haye in a hurry
THE English cruiserweight title fight
between David Haye and Lee Swaby
scheduled initially for February 20, seems
to have gone away.
Lion were supposed to promote it, but
couldn't secure a TV date with the BBC.
Haye is now exploring other options and
expected to box next month.
The unbeaten Londoner was sparring
former European champ Alexander Gurov
last week.
Manager and trainer Adam Booth has
also been keeping an eye on the domestic
scene which, with Carl Thompson and
Enzo Maccarinelli winning impressively
recently, is hotting up.
Booth said Haye, a former World
amateur championships silver medallist
(at heavy), wants to move up the pecking
order quickly and find his level.
Paz farewell
I VINNY PAZ, the colourful American supermiddle,
is to have his final fight at the Foxwoods
Casino, Ledyard on March 27.
Paz, 41, wants to end his staggering career with
a win, his 50th. He hasn't boxed since March
2002, when Eric Lucas beat him for the WBC 12st
belt.
But the listed opponent, former Joe Calzaghe
WBO title victim Tocker Pudwill, ought to be an
easy enough test if the "Pazmanian Devil" has any
fight left.
No match for Castro
ROSARIO, Argentina - February 21
• A CROWD of 3,800 showed up at the
Newell's Old Boys Stadium to see veteran
former WBA middleweight champ JORGE
CASTRO, now overweight and boxing as a
cruiser, knock out ARTURO RIVERA in the
second of a scheduled 10-rounder.
Rivera, the Mexican light-heavyweight
champ and a lawyer, was no match for
the old-timer.
The visitor was dropped early in the
second and Castro, 37, who has had 138
fights (10 defeats and three draws),
landed a succession of blows to force
the referee's intervention.
Next up for Castro, who has been in
with the likes of Roy Jones and Terry
Norris in his prime, is Marcelo Dominguez
in June.
At welterweight ALADINO "EL NINO"
ALANIS scored two late knockdowns - in
the ninth and 10th sessions - to secure a
points win over Dominican journeyman
JOSE JOAQUIN ROSA GOMEZ.
