Wayne gets McCline
** BECKENHAM southpaw Wayne Llewellyn has
landed the most important fight of his career - an
April 15 date with world-rated Jameel McCline
in New York.
Llewellyn hasn't boxed in Britain since
outpointing Luke Simpkin over six rounds nearly
three years ago. His last four fights have been
in Germany, the most recent being an easy
second-round stoppage in October.
Llewellyn, whose third-round stoppage of
British and Commonwealth champion Michael
Sprott in October 2000 now looks an impressive
result, faces McCline on Cedric Kushner's
Showtime-televised card from the Hammerstein
Ballrooms.
But the 33-year-old, who has won 26 of 30
starts (19 inside) and has a history of pulling out
of fights, is a serious underdog against the 6ft 6in
American.
Also on the bill is a heavyweight battle
between Jeremy Williams and Swede Attila
Levin. British-based Israeli Roman Greenberg
also boxes.
Barrett jailed
I PAT BARRETT, former British and European
light-welterweight champion, was sentenced
to three years of possessing a firearm without
a licence and given a consecutive three-month
term for having ammunition following a trial at
Snaresbrook Crown Court.
Barrett, 36 and from Manchester, claimed he
had been set up following a tip-off which saw
police raid his hotel room in Chingford in February
2003.
Police also found 1.55g of heroin and 293g
of cannabis along with the modified revolver and
live ammunition.
Nicknamed "Black Flash", Barrett challenged
for the WBO title, losing on points to Manning
Galloway.
Roy takes mike
I ROY JONES is to replace George Foreman on
HBO's broadcasting team in America after
Foreman recently stepped down.
Jones, who boxes on the network, used to be
a "colour" commentator until a few years ago.
What's interesting, though, is that when Roy
fights next on HBO - against Antonio Tarver on
May 15 - his colleagues, Jim Lampley and Larry
Merchant, will have to give their opinions on him.
Docherty defence
IT should be a good points-scoring exercise
for Craig Docherty should he retain his
Commonwealth super-featherweight title at
Glasgow's Kelvin Hall on April 22.
Docherty will defend against Ghana's Kpakpo
Allotey. a puncher who knocked out Ugandan
Michael Kizza, Alex Arthur's opponent in
Edinburgh tomorrow (Saturday March 27).
Hampered by a knee injury in training when
he shrugged off a bad cut to retain on points
against Abdul Jabir in November, Docherty said
he is already fitter.
Witter at home
JUNIOR WITTER will make his first appearance
as a professional in hometown Bradford when
he challenges for the vacant European lightwelterweight
title against Italy's Salvatore
Battaglia on April 16.
Southpaw Battaglia will be making his second
attempt to become EBU champion having lost on
points to world-class Germany Oktay Urkal last
year in a close one.
Gloves probe
K THE Boxing Board of Control will hold a hearing
on April 21 to investigate the circumstances
surrounding alleged glove tampering when Carl
Thompson won the IBO cruiserweight title from
Sebastiaan Rothmann last month.
It was discovered the nylon strap connecting
the thumb to the glove on Thompson's gloves
had become unattached.
Jamie's youngest
I JAMIE SANIGAR, son of Bristol fight figure
Chris, is the youngest promoter in the country
at 24.
Young Jamie and A-Force will promote at
Marjons in Plymouth on April 2 with local
favourite Scott Dann topping over eight against
Watford veteran Ojay Abrahams, who is promising
to knock out the southpaw.
Sanigar, by the way, is also a budding football
agent. He has on his books Manchester United
