Desperate measures
• AUSTRALIAN manager and trainer Keith Ellis has
received a suspended jail sentence for diverting
$100,000 into his ailing hotel business by claiming
robberies at his pub.
One of his boxers, Mick O'Malley, even stabbed
himself with a syringe and vomited to make an
armed-robbery claim appear real.
O'Malley won the vacant Commonwealth superfeather
title in Coventry in 1999 with an impressive
first-round stoppage of Richard Evatt but lost it in his
first defence to Scotland's Ian McLeod in Glasgow. He
was also stopped by Alex Moon in Britain.
Ellis and O'Malley pleaded guilty in Melbourne to all
deception charges. They received a suspended sixmonth
jail term and were ordered to repay more than
$99,000 between them (O'Malley co-owns the hotel).
Ellis, 46, is the older brother of former IBF superfeather
champ Lester. Sadly, it was revealed in court
that Lester was suffering depression and alcoholism.
Jamie must wait
• JAMIE MOORE had just £500 docked from his purse
by the Boxing Board despite being disqualified against
Michael Jones last month when losing his British 11st
title.
He was also made mandatory contender, but that
will allow Jones to make a voluntary in the next six
months before he has to face Jamie within another
six-month timescale.
Moore wanted-an immediate rematch. "I feel let
down by the Board," he said. "They told me the voting
was very close on the matter, but that's no good to me."
Fenech 'revenge'
• THE two brothers who, with two other men, attacked
Aussie legend Jeff Fenech this year were sent to jail in
Sydney.
The attack left Fenech, a three-weight 'world' champ,
requiring surgery after his face was sliced open.
Bilal and Khaled Nagi each pleaded guilty to charges
of affray. Bilal was sentenced to eight months and
Khaled six months' periodic detention.
Gainer reason
• DERRICK GAINER said he pulled out of his "WBA
featherweight title" fight with Chris John in Indonesia
because he said he was told he would be boxing
indoors, then discovered it was outdoors.
He accused the promoters of "dirty tricks".
The fight should still happen. Gainer will be allowed a
tune-up, then enter into purse bids with the John camp.
Hughes denial
• BRIAN HUGHES, trainer of unbeaten Manchester
puncher Matthew Hall, said his boxer's hands were
no more than bruised going into his last fight against
Howard Clarke.
We'd reported that Hall started with a broken knuckle,
but Hughes said that definitely wasn't the case. Hall
took the fight at 12 hours' notice and went the sixround
distance to win, but Hughes said Matthew did
hurt his hand during the match.
Early on, he ruptured the tendon in his left hand.
"That's not the same as him going into the fight with
a break," he said.
• PAUL KEIR earned his spurs
against Jeffries, showing bottle.
He is a David Starie lookalike.
This bout summed up what
boxing was all about. One second
Jeffries was looking to finish him,
the next they were hugging and
almost comparing notes at the
final bell. Brilliant.
• EDDIE ROBB, who was MC at the Class A Finals, has written a
letter of complaint to the ABA over his treatment at the England
v USA international at the Liverpool Olympia on December 3.
Robb was appointed Master of Ceremonies for the televised show by the
Referees and Judges Commission but on the night was told the role was being
performed by professional MC Mike Goodall.
