Hunt-Meager on
THE domestic lightweight division is looking
hot right now, with a good young champion
in Graham Earl and a bevy of bright young
contenders mixed in with fearsome exchamp
Bobby Vanzie and ever-dangerous
Steve Murray.
Two of the young hopes meet in
September when Danny Hunt defends his
English title against Lee Meager on a
Sports Network show.
It looks a cracker and is a mandatory
defence - Sports Network won the bidding.
No date or venue has been set.

Delay for Booth
• TONY BOOTH didn't box WBF cruiser king Bash AN in
Nigeria as planned last Saturday. His manager Eugene
Maloney wanted Booth's £8,000 purse deposited in Tony's
or the Board's bank before they departed but it wasn't.
"Bash even rang me up last Thursday telling me about
flights and directions," said Maloney, "but I told them all
along we needed the money up front.
"What was to stop them giving us just two or three
grand while over there?"
Things had changed within days, as they do in the fight
game. Ali himself flew over with the money this week and
the fight was back on - on August 14 in Lagos.

FRANK WARREN is still working with
Showtime and Sky on the exact date
for October's WBA light-welterweight
title fight between VIVIAN HARRIS
and RICKY HATTON (right).
He said in his weekly News of the World
column Harris had a massive punch and could
start a slight favourite. Can't argue with that.
He also said he had opened negotiations with
WBC light-heavy king ANTONIO TARVER for a
fight with JOE CALZAGHE.

Guzman challenge will fall on deaf ears
THE promoters of unbeaten WBO super-bantam champ JOAN GUZMAN have
proposed a unification tournament. If only it were that simple!
Anyway, Ringside Promotions by Sycuan would like to see their boy in with WBC king
Oscar Larios, WBA titlist Mahyar Monshipour and IBF ruler Israel Vazquez. "This is a sure
way to raise interest," said vice-president Scott Woodworth, speaking the obvious.
In this day and age, it would be a miracle if the tourney happened. They say boxing
is a family, but no-one works together. It's a shame, because Guzman is good.
Sky TV subscribers may recall "Little Tyson" butchering Argentina's Fabio Oliva to
become champ on a Joe Calzaghe bill in Cardiff in 2002. He is a Dominican.

Never too old
• DEREK SMITH of Rawthorpe ABC in
Huddersfield recently passed his
assistant coaching award through the
Yorkshire ABA.
What's so remarkable about that? Well,
Derek is the oldest ever to pass at 73!
"Derek is a big part of our club and the
lads love him," said Rawthorpe boss Mark
Reynolds.
Meanwhile, the club's Andrew Butlin has
turned pro with Manchester's Wayne Barker.
Andrew won 20 of his 28 bouts, boxing as
far afield as Denmark, Cyprus and the
Seychelles. He also competed against a
France select in England.
Pointed out a proud Reynolds, "The lad he
beat in the Seychelles, Alvin Gabriel, went on
to box in the Olympic Qualifiers.
"Andrew is diligent trainer who doesn't
drink or smoke. He has a bright future in the
paid ranks because he always had the style
for the pros.
"He was a founder member of our club and
we wish him all the best."
