Hoye beats Calzaghe
LANKY light-heavy Rico Hoye is to box former WBC
champion Montell Griffin in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario on
September 16 to secure his No. 1 rating with the IBF.
Hoye knocked out useful southpaw Richard Hall in
four rounds in Las Vegas in April in an IBF eliminator.
He is prepared to face Griffin to ensure he has a crack
at next month's Glen Johnson-Roy Jones winner.
That had been the target for British promoter Frank
Warren, who wanted to match Joe Calzaghe with Clinton
Woods in October as an IBF title final eliminator.
But the 6ft 3in Hoye is ahead of Joe in the pecking
order and strongly favoured to defeat Griffin, who stands
only 5ft 7in and is 34.
Hoye, from Detroit and a good puncher, is undefeated
in 17 starts with all but three wins coming inside.
Danny withdraws
HAVING turned his attention to the world scene
following his knockout of Mike Tyson, Danny Williams
has withdrawn from a vacant European Union title fight
with Herbie Hide.
Williams boxes Oleg Maskaev in London on October 9.
Steele comeback?
IT'S not just the boxers who make comebacks.
Richard Steele, the Nevada referee who three-and-ahalf
years ago quit to become a promoter, is set to return
to his former profession.
Steele, 60, has yet to complete the formalities of
regaining his licence by appearing before the Nevada
Commission.
He says he misses refereeing after failing to make an
impact as a promoter. As third man, he took charge of
167 'world' title bouts in 30 years.
Burke's new start
FORMER European lightweight title challenger David
Burke's contract with Matchroom has expired and he
has signed for fellow-Liverpudlian Stephen Vaughan.
Burke will have his first fight since that EBU title loss to
Stefano Zoff in June 2003 when he tops in a six-rounder
at Everton Park Sports Centre on September 10.
Vaughan promotes, John Ingle is matchmaker and
Ingle boy Danny Thorpe the likely opponent in what Lee
Molloy of Vaughan Promotions described as a "loosener".
Burke also has a new trainer. He has
Danny's back
• DANNY FLYNN Jnr has returned to
action with Gilmerton, that Edinburgh
outfit's boss Rab Young has confirmed.
Kid brother, former Scottish bantamweight
champion Scott, turned pro on June's Scott
Harrison-William Abelyan title bill in Renfrew.
Featherweight Danny Jnr has been away
from the game for around three years but is
still in his early-20s and Young said: "We're
glad to have him aboard."
Amir's buddy
• AMATEUR fans may have spotted
Hollington light-flyweight Darran Langley
alongside Amir Khan in Greece during one
of the BBC interviews.
Langley, of course, didn't qualify for the
Olympics but he and Khan get on well.
According to Darran's dad Dave, 56,
Amir asked for his son personally.
Langley goes under the pass in the
Olympic village as "Amir Khan's buddy!"
Also with Khan is Kirkdale's Neil Perkins,
a first reserve at welter. They have all been
training together.
