Reid rematch blow
I HAVING failed to get any concrete assurances
from the WBA that he will get another shot at
super-middleweight champ Sven Ottke, Robin Reid
may turn his attention to IBO king Brian Magee.
Reid's promoter Jess Harding said the WBA
were very "non-committal" in response to an
appeal against the verdict and refereeing of the
Ottke fight.
"The IBF were adamant there was nothing
wrong," said Jess. "The WBA have offered us a
fight against another top 15 contender and, if they
make it a final eliminator, we'd be interested."
Alternatively, there is southpaw Magee, much
improved and undefeated. He defends in Belfast on
April 17 and is eager to prove himself at top level.
Reid, considered hugely unfortunate against
WBA/IBF champ Ottke, would be the perfect
challenger. Matchroom confirmed negotiations
have taken place and Harding said he was
definitely considering it.
According to German promoter Wilfried
Sauerland, Ottke will not box beyond this year.
Ole stays retired
OLE KLEMETSEN, Norway's hard-hitting former
European light-heavy champ, has rejected an offer
from local businessmen to come out of retirement.
Ole, 32, now has a son and regular job.
Lewis co-promotes
B HEAVYWEIGHTS Audley Harrison and Lennox
Lewis are teaming up for the unbeaten southpaw's
next fight, a 12-rounder against WBF champion
Richei Hersisia at Wembley Arena on March 20.
Now-retired former world champ Lewis is copromoting
the show with Audley's A-Force.
The card, will probably feature Nicky Cook's
European featherweight title challenge against
Frenchman Cyril Thomas. The BBC televise later
that evening at 11.15pm.
Limond chance
• WILLIE LIMOND has been named to box
Youssef Djibaba, a 27-year-old from Marseille, for
the vacant European Union super-featherweight
title.
Purse offers have been called for Monday,
February 23. Djibaba, a short-armed Baby Jake
Matlala type, is a former challenger for the EBU
title when he was stopped in eight by veteran Affif
Djelti last April.
Facey goal
ANDREW FACEY, who beat unbeaten Matthew
Macklin to become English light-middleweight
champ, goes up a division to box Wayne Pinder
for the middleweight equivalent in Nottingham on
March 12.
Facey says his goal is to box in his home city of
Wolverhampton - he even talked of promoting
himself there.
The man who fights out of the Ingle gym in
Sheffield has never boxed in or around his home
region as a pro. The closest was Birmingham on
his debut.
Etienne back
LAFAYETTE, Indiana - February 14
• CLIFFORD ETIENNE returned from his
quick defeat by Mike Tyson a year ago
to stop regular loser SHAWN ROBINSON
in the fourth of an eight-rounder.
Robinson has been hammered by both
Danny Williams (two rounds) and Audley
Harrison (one).
Easy for Santos
• ST PETERSBURG, Florida - February 15:
IBF No. 5 super-feather David Santos blew
away clubfighter Marty Robbins inside a
round while light-heavy Aaron Jaco, son of
former pro heavy David, stopped outgunned
Gerald Lowe in the same round.
Also at light-heavyweight, Olando Rivera
decisioned Kerry Parks over 10.
DEVONPORT-February 14
• THE Southern Section of the Western Counties completed their list
of qualifiers in a single session at The Guild Hall, with two divisions
(feather and light-welter) requiring entrants to box twice.
Exeter's Abas Afsharian drew the short straw at featherweight and
had an uncompromising battle with Jersey raider Les Bulpin, claiming
a split decision, before bowing out to Brent Burns - who had benefited
from a bye - on a unanimous decision.
But there was better news for the Channel Island gym in the fourcornered
welterweight category.
