Glen's mission
DON'T call him Glen-coffee, as I've often heard
it pronounced. IBF light-heavyweight champion
Glengoffe Johnson, lined up for Britain's Joe
Calzaghe this summer, is more than willing to
face the undefeated Newbridge southpaw.
The Miami-based Jamaican realises victory
over Calzaghe could pave the way for a match
with the Roy Jones-Antonio Tarver winner.
Most importantly, Johnson wants to start
boxing at home more often. He fought Clinton
Woods twice in Britain and has also fought in
Germany (twice) and often in his opponent's
backyard in the States.
A win for Calzaghe over Johnson, however,
could open doors for the Welshman. The
Universum camp confirmed they were in talks
for Dariusz Michalczewski to challenge Fabrice
Tiozzo for the WBA light-heavyweight title.
They said Michalczewski, if successful, could
then meet Calzaghe, believing a victory for Joe
against Johnson was almost a formality.
Froch-Dodson
ANOTHER title fight set for last month but had
to be postponed because of injury, Carl Froch's
challenge for Tony Dodson's British supermiddleweight
title, goes ahead on June 2.
No venue has been confirmed. Their original
meeting was at the Nottingham Ice Arena, where
Froch had his hands full with Ghana's Charles
Adamu, who replaced Dodson at late notice.
Froch had to pull out all the stops to win and
maintain his undefeated record. He now goes
into the double title fight with Dodson as
Commonwealth champ.
Confident as always, Froch said: "The fight
can't go the distance. I'm faster, stronger and
hit harder. He's out of his depth."
Lazcano-Castillo
THE vacant WBC lightweight title fight between
Juan Lazcano and former champion Jose Luis
Castillo has been confirmed for the June 5 MGM
Grand Hotel, Las Vegas show which features
Bernard Hopkins and Oscar De La Hoya in
middleweight title bouts.
Michael fights on
• MICHAEL BRODIE, who suffered
only the second defeat of a 37-fight
career, admitted: "I got beaten by
the better fighter.
"I gave it everything I'd got
but he caught me with a good
uppercut and a body shot and that
finished me off.
"Chi's so strong and so wild
- you couldn't name a better
featherweight in the world right
now than him.
"I've never ducked anyone and
never will, but you won't see Scott
Harrison or Naseem Hamed getting
in with him.
"It hurts because winning this
world title has been my dream for
all the years I've been boxing
since I was a kid, but all credit to
Chi and I'll be back."
No joy for Repton's Wallace
• NO joy for Repton's ANDREW WALLACE in his bid to qualify for the Olympics
representing Jamaica.
Boxing at featherweight in the final Americas qualifying tournament in Rio
de Janeiro, Brazil (April 6-11), Wallace was stopped in three rounds by
Canada's BENOIT GAUDET.
It was Andrew's opening contest and Gaudet went on to qualify for Athens
by reaching the final, where he won gold.
