Cook-Ndou is hot
• JASON COOK has a tough defence of his IBO lightweight
title against South Africa's world-class Phillip
Ndou in Hereford on November 5.
Ndou has scored 30 of 31 wins inside schedule but
is coming off two defeats - on points to South African
hotshot Isaac Hlatshwayo in May and by stoppage in
seven to Floyd Mayweather for the WBC belt last
November.
The same bill, promoted by Matchroom, features
homtowner Dazzo Williams in a British featherweight
title defence against John Simpson.

Fundo Finn bid foiled
• PASSPORT problems prevented Scottish welter
champ FUNDO MAHURA from boxing in the
Tampere multi-nations happening this week
(October 14-17) in Finland, writes BRIAN DONALD.
Malawi-born Mahura (Sparta) is now a British
citizen but didn't have a valid UK passport, so
required a Finnish visa. That couldn't be cleared
in time to allow him to compete.
Definitely competing in Finland are: Mark Hastie
(Forgewood/60), Craig McEwan (Clovenstone/75),
Kenny Anderson (Craigmillar/75) and Steve Simmons
(Leith Victoria/91).

• SHEFFIELD has been suffering
a shortage of qualified ABA refs,
so Tucker has helped out.
"I've just passed the referee's
course, along with another guy,"
said the man who is already coach
and matchmaker at Handsworth
Police.
"I did my first show on Monday
[October 4). Before us, there was
only one referee in the whole of
Sheffield, and only three in our
Division. At least now there's
three in Sheffield, which has a
big population and lots of clubs."

Guinn on ESPN
• DOMINICK GUINN will box on December 3 on a
show to be televised in the US on ESPN.
No opponent has been determined for the 29-yearold
heavy, who rebounded from a disappointing defeat
by Monte Barrett to knock out Phil Jackson in July.
Guinn's trainer Mark Breland said: "Now he [Dominick]
has been beaten, he realises what he can do. I always tell
him 'You can fight, but don't wait [to punch]. Boxing's not
a waiting game. When he wants to fight, he can. He's
strong and fast and can punch."
Breland, who at the end of this month goes to
Houston, where Guinn, 25-1 (18), will be in training
camp, said: "The heavyweight divisions stinks right
now and boxing's become almost like wrestling. The
Prince [Naseem Hamed] started it. I'm waiting for
someone to come in on a helicopter next."
In fact, Breland wasn't too optimistic about the
sport's future. "Amateur boxing is terrible right now
and boxing, period, is dying," he said.
