Jesper for Enzo
BUSY Enzo Maccarinelli defends - for the fifth time
- his WBU cruiserweight title when on September 3 at
the Newport Sports Centre he take on the Dane Jesper
Kristiansen.
Maccarinelli, taken the 12-round distance for the
first time in his last defence - against Ismail Abdoul in
July - has just one loss from 19 starts.
His opponent next month is a former European title
challenger, having lost widely on points in May 2003 to
Italian southpaw Pietro Aurino, who had earlier (2000)
failed in a WBO title challenge against Johnny Nelson.
The latter is Maccarinelli's target for a big domestic
fight before the end of the year.
Kristiansen is not a puncher, with nine stoppages or
knockouts from 25 wins. He has four defeats and a
draw.
He did grind down Garry Delaney in 10 in April 2000
and Earl Morais in eight in October 2002. But Delaney
would lose in eight to Maccarinelli this February while
Morais was blasted in the first by the Swansea man
last December.
Main support at Newport will see an excellent
middleweight clash between Gary lockett and
Wayne Elcock in an eliminator for the WBU title.
The match was first scheduled for last month, but
Lockett pulled out injured.

Khan's quest begins
I'M sure you would all like to join me in wishing
Bolton's Amir Khan good luck next week as his
quest for Olympic gold begins.
He boxes first on Monday, assuming he doesn't get
a bye.
We spoke to his dad Shah several times this week
and will be keeping in touch with him when he joins
his son in Athens this weekend.
A party of 12 - family, friends and club trainer Mick
Jellie - is going over to support the teenage lightweight.
Shah was grateful that Audley Harrison visited Amir
in Britain's Olympic training village in Cyprus this week.
He said Audley, among other things, gave his son some
tips on how to defuse a southpaw.
Harrison is a southpaw himself, course, and Shah
admitted his son does have "a bit of a problem with
southpaws."
"Call me on Tuesday," added Shah, "and hopefully
I'll have some good news."

Roy weather beaten
EXTREME weather prevented Roy Jones from
attending a press conference in Tunica, Mississippi
on Tuesday to officially announce his September 25
challenge for Glen Johnson's IBF light-heavy title.
Johnson-Jones will take place at the 12,000-seater
FedEx Forum, Memphis.
It will be Jones' first fight since losing in two rounds
to Antonio Tarver in May and veteran Johnson's first
defence.

Scott's sick
SCOn HARRISON'S WBO featherweight title defence
on September 10 in Glasgow has been postponed.
The Scot pulled out after food poisoning while on
holiday in Cyprus affected his preparations.
Harrison is expected to box again

McCrory marries
CONGRATULATIONS to Glenn McCrory, former
IBF cruiserweight champ and now Sky Sports
commentator, who got hitched for the second time.
McCrory and American partner Miranda Ives tied the
knot in Northumberland. Jim Watt and Billy Hardy, as
well as Audley Harrison, attended the wedding.
