Toney vow
• INCAPACITATED he may be, but James Toney
hasn't stopped talking or bragging.
The Los Angeles-based heavyweight, in plaster
for six to 10 weeks from an Achilles tendon injury,
insists he will return better than ever.
The long-term plan for Toney is to face the
winner of the vacant WBO battle between
Wladimir Klitschko and Lamon Brewster
(see separate story).
"I want the best because I am the best,"
declared Toney. "All Dan [Goossen] has to do is
sign them up and I'll knock them down."
Griffin steps down
• JOHNNY GRIFFIN has decided after 40 years in
the business to retire from management and
concentrate solely on promoting.
A happy Griffin told me recently he'd deliberated
about the move for some time, having managed
two British champions, light-heavyweights Tim
Wood and Neil Simpson, and countless Area
title-holders.
"I've had a wonderful time in management,"
said the Leicester promoter. "I managed well over
100 fighters and the highlight was getting the Joe
Bromley Award for services to boxing from the
Boxing Writers' Club a few years ago.
"That took me by complete surprise. I knew
nothing about it and completely clammed up. It
really got to me."
Edison on way
R COLOMBIA is about to unleash to the United
States 23-year-old knockout specialist Edison
Miranda, who has won all 19 fights inside the
distance, 15 in the opening round and one inside
eight seconds!
Miranda, a middle-cum-super-middle, is based
in the Dominican Republic but has also fought in
his native country and Panama.
Miranda looks an exciting talent. One of his
victims, Feliberto Alvarez, had lasted 12 with
Ricardo Mayorga in September 2000 but was
brushed aside in three by Edison last July.
The majority of Miranda's opponents, though,
have had losing records and few wins between
them, so the jury is still out.
Monteiro v Wayne?
R "TAKALOO, Eugenio Monteiro is still waiting
for a return with you." So says Monteiro's agent
Jimmy Gill, who hopes Eugenio's upset points
victory over Takaloo last month will push him into
the European ratings.
There is talk on the websites of Monteiro v
Wayne Alexander in a WBU 11st title fight.

Darran proves too good
• DARRAN LANGLEY warmed up for the European Champs when he outscored
JAMES FOWL over four-twos on the South Norwood & Victory dinner show at
Fairfield Halls in Croydon on February 3.
In a good-quality contest, ABA finalist Fowl (Haileybury) kept things close for
two rounds but in the third Langley (Hollington) stepped it up to produce his best
work. Langley is pictured (left) on the offensive.
