THE big one is on . . . Gerrie Coetzee, the hard-hitting white South African who holds the WBA
heavyweight title, has signed to meet Larry Holmes in Las Vegas in June or July to determine
who is the real heavyweight champion of the world.
The fight cannot be billed as for the undisputed world heavyweight title as Holmes earlier this
month relinquished the WBC title unbeaten and accepted recognition instead from the International
Boxing Federation. The New York Commission will also continue to recognise him as champion.

MULTI-TITLED junior NeviUe Brown, 17, had a
shattering introduction to the seniors when he was
blasted out cold in the second round of the 3 x 3's
show topper on the Boston ABC show at Kitwood
Boys School.

LOOKING a "knock-out" in their new boxing strips are these youngsters
from Liverpool's Bronte Amateur Boxing Club. The Abbey National Building
Society have provided the kit, enough for all weights.
Mr Eddie Deane of the Local Branch of the Abbey National went along
to present the kit, and he's pictured with Colin Dunne, aged 12 (centre
left) and Peter Foulkes.

SUGAR RAY LEONARD'S comeback has aroused huge
interest in America - but he may not be allowed to box in
New York State.
The New York Commission is concerned because Leonard
has suffered a detached retina. It has always been a
policy in New York that if a fighter had received retina
damage he would not be allowed to box in the state, no
matter how famous or successful he might be.

THE 15-rounder between WBA lightweight champion RAY MANCINI and
popular veteran BOBBY CHACON has been scheduled for January 14 at Reno,
Nevada.
Promotor Bob Andreoli has applied to the WBA to have it recognised as a title
bout.
The purse is $2.1m, with Mancini believed to be getting $1.5m.
Originally, Mancini was to have received $2m and Chacon $lm but promoter
Andreoli failed to get the sort of national TV deal that would have enabled him to
pay these purses
