OLD FATHER TIME, aided and abetted by the
boundless enthusiasm of David Pearce, finally removed
the British Heavyweight crown from the balding
head of Neville Meade, just three seconds from
the end of the ninth round of an absorbing battle at
Cardiff s sumptuous new St David's Hall.
PROMOTER Ron Gray's first show at the Dudley Town
Hall since July 1981 was rewarded with a near-capacity
audience and a cracking eight rounds main event featuring
old rivals Paul Chance of Wednesbury and Mickey Baker of
Worcester.
ALEXIS ARGUELLO, like so many other great men,
reached for the sun and crashed.
With world titles at three separate weights, his 30th birthday
and more than 80 professional fights behind him, Arguello
could have quit content in the knowledge that he would
be remembered as one of the greatest boxers in history.
SOUTH AFRICA'S Gerrie Coetzee says he wants to be the
champion of all the people - "not a specific person's champion"
- after his stunning 10th round knockout victory
over Michael Dokes at the Coliseum to win the WBA
heavyweight title at his third attempt.
It was Coetzee's way of saying he doesn't want anyone to
consider him a White Hope.
Coetzee, who now lives and trains in America, sent Dokes
to the floor with two crashing rights to the head just before
the bell rang for the end of the 10th round to become the
first white world heavyweight champion since Ingemar Johanssen
23 years ago.
DAVID BRAXTON, a tall stylish veteran from Detroit,
retained his NABF light-middleweight title and upset the
world championsip hopes of James "Hard Rock" Green
with a split but deserved 12-rounds decision win at the Ice
World.
STEVE EARLY makes his comeback after a brief retirement when he challenges ADEY
ALLEN for his Midland light-welterweight title over 10 rounds at the Midland Sporting
Club, Solihull on Wednesday.
It will be stocky, aggressive Allen's first defence of the title he won by stopping Mickey
Baker on an eye injury at Dudley in July 1981. Early was to have fought Baker last February
but pulled out and retired. But now he is back and facing a tough, possibly losing fight.
