HOWARD DAVIS, often criticised for excessive movement,
planted his feet and punched with authority to stop
Detroit's useful Greg Coverson in their CBS-TV bout from
Atlantic City on June 18.
But is this a "new" Howard Davis? We'll have to wait and
see. He probably felt he could gamble a bit against Coverson.
In terms of "real" weight he had, I suspect, a significant
edge.
GAME redhead FREDDIE ROACH had Ron Lyle in his
corner for his junior-lightweight bout with Mexican REYNALDO
ZARAGOZA on the ESPN-TV show from Las Vegas
on June 30.
Freddie punched his hardest for some while to put Zaragoza
down and out after two minutes 37 seconds of the eighth
in a scheduled 10-rounder.
Roach has had trouble with his right hand, but he was really
letting fly in this fight. His left hook looked solid, too.
Apparendy, Lyle had been spending a lot of time with
Roach in the gym, working on the hook. But Lyle, who has
moved to Vegas from Denver, was anxious not to take any
credit from Roach's regular chief second, Eddie Futch, who
was away supervising Michael Spinks' training for the fight
with Eddie Mustafa Muhammad.
A BIG-MONEY fight hung in the balance as Juan
Laporte battled down to the wire to outpoint Johnny
de la Rosa on a split vote and keep his WBC
featherweight title.
Laporte has a defence lined up for later this year
against his fellow-Puerto Rican Wilfredo Gomez, the
former undefeated WBC super bantam champ. Gomez,
at ringside in San Juan on June 25, must have
been holding his breath as his compatriot was forced
to fight flat out in the closing rounds.
A RECENT unsavoury incident that took place in Madison Square Garden
shocked the fight fraternity as well as the general public as soon as the details
became known.
Ordinarily, one would have thought such a heinous hunk of hanky-panky could have been
perpetrated only during some bygone boxing era in some Godforsaken place like Shelby,
Goldfield or Crippled Creek. Yet it happened in the fabulous boxing mecca the night
Roberto Duran defeated WBA light-middleweight champ Davey Moore to become the
seventh fighter to win titles in three different divisions.
In the semi-final light-middleweight contest, Luis Resto pounded out a unanimous 10-
round decision over Irish Billy Collins, Jr. in an action-packed slugfest that drove the crowd
delirious.
UNBEATEN heavyweight hope Frank Bruno made his
American debut via the soft belly of the US heavyweight
ranks with a second round kayo win over mediocre Mike
Jameson. The fight took place in the less than glamorous
surroundings of a suburban dance hall in Chicago on July 9
before an attendance estimated at 400. The BBC paid
£20,000 to televise the match live for British viewers.
