CLINTON McKENZIE retained his British light-welterweight
crown with a clear decision over official challenger
Alan Lamb in a hard-fought and sometimes thrilling 12-
rounder at Liverpool Stadium.
The near-capacity crowd, solidly behind the challenger (from
Lancaster), provided tremendous atmosphere, and the booing when
referee James Brimmell raised McKenzie's hand was predictable,
though not justified. Most ringsiders, infact, felt the official 118-117
scoreline was distinctly generous to Lamb.

EXCITING Newport heavyweight David Pearce cleared
the way for a shot at Neville Meade's British title when he
kayoed Belgian champion A1 Syben (who holds a fourth
round knockout over Meade) with a single left hook after
2.25 of the first of a scheduled eight threes joint main event
at the Lyceum, writes ANTHONY CONNOLLY
The punch sent Syben over in Pearce's corner, glassyeyed,
and he was counted out by referee Sid Nathan as he
attempted to rise.

UNHERALDED Italian Guido Trane scored a shock win
over Bermondsey-based Liverpudlian Billy Aird stopping
him after 35 seconds of the fifth round of a scheduled eightthrees
joint top-liner, writes STEVEN CONNOLLY
Aird had been down for seven in the fourth, the bell
saving him, and Trane wasted no time in the fifth, flooring
him once more for eight and pounding him on the ropes
before referee Sid Nathan (officiating in his 1,000th contest)
intervened.

STEVE SIMS' gallant bid for the vacant EBU
featherweight title came to an end when he was stopped at
the end of the fifth on a badly cut right eye by unbeaten
Italian Loris Stecca.
The ringside doctor came to the Welsh corner in the
interval between the fifth and sixth and instructed the referee
to stop the fight.
The fast Italian's precise punches were responsible for the
bad cut and bruising on the gutsy Welshman's face.
Sims never stopped trying, marching into the nimble
Italian and trying to slow him down with his heavy rights
and left hooks.

MARIANO GARCIA proved that it's never too late to gain
revenge when he won the vacant Spanish flyweight title by
outpointing Enrique Rodriguez Cal over 10 rounds in Madrid
on March 11.
The 37-year-old Garcia had lost his last 15 fights, and in
four previous bouts Cal had won every time, so Mariano's
victory was against all the odds.
