FORMER WBA light-heavyweight champion Eddie Mustafa
Muhammad appears to have committed professional
suicide by refusing to try to make weight for his scheduled
world title rematch against Michael Spinks on July 15.
Muhammad insisted that the scales, which showed him
two-and-a-half pounds over the limit, had been rigged.
Butch Lewis, who was to have promoted the fight in
America's capital of Washington, said: "If ever in the
history of boxing a set of scales were perfectly calibrated,
these are those scales."
The scales were checked by an official from Washington's
department of weights and measures and pronounced in
perfect order.

WHEN I was a mere lad, just getting to feel the
magnetism of boxing and becoming absorbed in its
history and heroes, one of the first names I came to
revere was Jim Driscoll's.
It was, of course, towards the end of his great
career, but those who knew him were always eager to
talk about his ring artistry and achievements and to
impress on me that not only was he unequalled as a
master boxer, but the like of him would never be seen
again.

BOXING has suffered another severe loss with the death of Larry Gains,
octogenarian extraordinary, ambassador and gentleman, whose funeral took
place yesterday (Thursday).
In a very short spell the sport is so much the poorer with the departure of
such splendid heavyweights as Jack Dempsey, an all-time great, Don Cockell, a
good and brave champion, and Larry Gains, the finest heavyweight produced
by Canada.

THE REMATCH between Aaron Pryor and Alexis Arguello
has been confirmed for Caesars Palace, Las Vegas on
September 9 with Thomas Hearns defending his WBC
light-middleweight title against James Green on the same
bill.

FIVE Commonwealth champions have been given an October
31 deadline to defend their titles or have them declared
vacant. The rulings were made at the July 20 meeting of the
Commonwealth Championships Committee in London,
which also set December 31 deadlines for a further six
divisions.
Heavyweight Trevor Berbick, of Canada, must defend
against his compatriot Gordie Racette, or the winner of the
Neville Meade-David Pearce British title fight due to take
place in Cardiff on September 22.
