MODERN ring legend Roberto Duran found
one last spark of his peak form in Los Angeles
last weekend when he blasted out former
WBA welterwight champion Pipino Cuevas in
four rounds. The win sets up a May WBA lightmiddleweight
title shot against Davey Moore,
who was also an inside the distance winner
last weekend. Read Steve Vender's ringside
report from Los Angeles on page 14.

HUGH RUSSELL is the new British bantamweight
champion — but not even the most partisan amongst
the capacity crowd at the Ulster Hall can have been
entirely satisfied with the manner of his coronation.
Defending champion John Feeney, from Hartlepool,
was disqualified by London referee Sid Nathan
after 1:00 of the 13th round for "persistent misuse of
the head", a decision which I felt did less than justice
to the loser.

NEW British lightweight champion George Feeney faces the toughest
fight of his career when he meets WBA lightweight champion Ray
Mancini in a non-title 10-rounder in St Vincent, Italy, on Sunday
(February 6).
The fight will be something of a milestone for both men. It will be
Feeney's first fight since thumping Ray Cattouse for his British title in 14
rounds of a classic contest in October, and it will be Mancini's first fight
since the Korean Duk Koo Kim died after being knocked out in an
unsuccessful challenge.
The Kim tragedy (compounded by the suicide this week of the Korean's
mother), came at the end of what was otherwise a very happy year
for the likeable and popular Mancini.

DAVEY MOORE had litde trouble retaining his WBA
light-middleweight tide by knocking out Gary Guiden in
the fourth round at Bally's Park Place casino hotel.
The win puts Moore in line for his biggest payday, a title
defence against Roberto Duran, who stopped Pipino Cuevas
the same day in Los Angeles, also in the fourth round.
Promoter Bob Arum promised Duran a tide fight provided he

defeated Cuevas. Moore said he will fight anyone. "Bring them all
on," he said after knocking out Guiden to make his third successful
defence of the tide.

HOLLINGTON ABC were determined to get a tournament
in early in 1983 and they just made it. Their open show took
place on January 31, but judging by the public response,
you'd have thought it was their last bill at the club's Comber
Grove, Camberwell HQ.
Said competition secretary Tom Condon: "We were a
litde worried, for Paddy Byrne was running his professional
show at the Elephant & Casde Recreational Centre, which is
only just around the corner from us.
"But so many fans turned up that we had to lock the doors
and tirn people away. We were already overcrowded and
what with over 50 boxers and officials, the hall was packed
to over capacity.
