MERSEYSIDE may have two champions by this time next week: flyweight
Keith Wallace (left) challenges European flyweight champion Antoine Montero
at Bloomsbury on Wednesday, while lightweight Tony Willis challenges
British champion George Feeney tomorrow (Saturday) at the Regent Crest
Hotel. See pages 2-4.

COMMONWEALTH flyweight champion Keith
Wallace carries the hopes and immediate fortunes of
promoter/manager Frank Warren into the ring with
him when he challenges European flyweight champion
Antoine Montero of France at the Bloomsbury
Crest Hotel on Wednesday.
The show was postponed from November 2, when
Wallace's father died and the fighter's concentration
was naturally impaired. There have been wranglings
outside the ring, which seem to dog Frank Warren
promotions.

UNBEATEN Frank Bruno who so closely courted disaster
in his last fight will have a point to prove about his defence
and durability when he takes on massive American Walter
Santemore over 10 rounds at the Albert Hall on Tuesday.
Bruno will be going for win no. 20 and it will be a massive
upset if he fails to secure it — but he came close to being
stopped or knocked out in his last fight against Floyd
"Jumbo" Cummings.
Cummings swung the clumsiest of rights at Bruno and
caught him napping. Down went Bruno's hands, and the
aptest thing that can be said is that Bruno was knocked out
on his feet.

EVER-IMPROVING James Cook was provided with stubborn
resistance before his opponent, Vince Gajny, finally
retired with multiple cuts in the sixth of a scheduled eight
(three minute) rounds at the Midland Sporting Club, writes
EDDIE CASH.
Although Cook, Peckham, had demonstrated his
superiority on a technical level, Gajny had withstood early
pressure and hit back resolutely in the fourth and fifth - at
one stage threatening to wear down Cook, who had landed
his best shots only to find southpaw Gajny, Stratford, slamming
back at him.

BARRY McGUIGAN has been voted Boxer Of The Year by
members of the London Ex-Boxers' Association, and the
presentation of the Dave Crowley Memorial Belt was due to
take place at LEBA's Annual Dinner/Dance at the Regent
Crest Hotel, last Friday evening.
Unfortunately, on the same night Barry was receiving
another award back home, having also been voted Irish
Sportsman Of The Year. As he could not split himself in
two, he couldn't be in London.
British featherweight champion McGuigan, who also won
the European crown so convincingly recendy, is a worthy
winner of LEBA's trophy, and we all hope that on his next
visit to London a suitable function can be arranged so that
the proper presentation can be made.

A HIGH-RANKING ABA official has quit amateur boxing
because of the London ABA's refusal to investigate serious
charges laid against a fellow member of the London ABA
Council in a national newspaper story.
