EAST HAM crowd-pleaser Gary Knight stepped out of his
depth on manager Frank Warren's charity show at York
Hall, and was pounded to a painful six-rounds defeat by
Vernon 'The Entertainer' Vanreil.
Referee Mike Jacobs waved Vanreil away after 65 seconds
of the sixth of their scheduled 10 rounds main event, with
Knight being pummelled against the ropes. Knight had
been floored in the fourth and again in the sixth, and had not
won a round on my card.

GOOD NEWS from the Kent Association, who have been
entertaining other Associations and also arranging to be
entertained. They welcomed contingents from the Sussex
and Croydon Associations at their HG, the Chatham Naval
Club, and are visiting the Slough Association on August 28.

ENGLAND'S boxers scored a resounding success in the
Greek-sponsored Acropolis multi-nation tournament in
Athens last week.
The seven man squad captured four gold, one silver and
one bronze medal in the sweltering couldron of the old
Olympic Stadium. Although they failed to secure as many
medals as their counterparts did in a previous visit in 1981,
England still managed to bring home the Acropolis Cup
because of finishing top of the medal league.
Saddest note of an otherwise successful foray was the
defeat of St Pancras light-welter David Dent. Dent was the
first boxer in action and unfortunately suffered a cut eye
during the second round of his contest with Arwom (Indonesia).
The referee allowed him to continue until the end of
the session, but upon inspection of the cut when the bell
sounded, coach Ian Irwin was forced to retire the ABA
champion.

JAUN LAPORTE of Puerto Rico had a tough, close struggle retaining
his WBC featherweight dde against Johnny De La Rosa, a tall,
stylish challenger from the Dominican Republic, with a split 12
rounds decision at the Roberto Clemente Coliseum.
Laporte won by scores of 116-112 on British official John Coyle's
card (wrongly announced as 116-111) and 115-114 on the card of the
second British judge Harry Gibbs, while Californian judge James Jen
Kim made it 116-11B in the challenger's favour.

! IT COULD be claimed that Juan Domingo Roldan is
close to becoming a world champion. The Argentinian
is rated No 1 by the WBA and No 2 by the WBC,
and should fight for the world title later this year.
In fact there is really only one man standing between
Roldan and a world title, but unfortunately for
Juan, that man is a modern colossus — Marvelous
Marvin Hagler.
