Morales gets nod
IT seems the WBC has made a U-turn and is
prepared to sanction the November 16 Erik
Morales-Paulie Ayala featherweight clash as
being for the vacant WBC title.
Morales lost the title to Marco Antonio Barrera
in Las Vegas in June, but Barrera said he didn't
want the belt.
Then it was thought leading contenders Juan
Manuel Marquez and In-jin Chi would fight for
the crown on October 5, but WBC president Jose
Sulaiman said he would have no objection
sanctioning the bigger financial bout between
Morales and Ayala.
With Morales rated No. 1, Chi No. 2, Marquez
No. 3 and Ayala No. 2 at super-bantam, two final
eliminators would probably be a fairer resolution.
A decision is expected soon.

Tapia black-out
INJURY has forced IBF featherweight champion
Johnny Tapia to pull out of a warm-up bout in
Bernalillo, New Mexico on September 6.
Tapia, who faces Marco Antonio Barrera in Las
Vegas on November 2, was to have fought
Antonio Sepeda, but was elbowed in the face
whilst playing basketball and reportedly suffered
black eyes.

Klitchkos in waiting
WLADIMIR KLITSCHKO, WBO heavyweight
champion waiting (and hoping) for a fight with
Lennox Lewis, will have only one more contest this
year, probably in America around November or
December.
Older brother Vitali, now recovered from a
back injury which forced him to pull out of a July
date against Larry Donald, has also been
mentioned as a possible Lewis opponent if the
world champion decides to carry on.

Oakey's super shot
TONY OAKEY is going to give the supermiddleweight
division a try when he boxes next,
in October.
Oakey will hold on to his WBU lightheavyweight
belt, but if the move to 12st is
successful, don't be surprised to see Tony
challenging Joe Calzaghe somewhere down the
road.
As an amateur, Oakey boxed as a
heavyweight and cruiser, but better training in
the professional ranks has helped him find his
true weight.

Limond warm-up
SEEING as Alex Arthur squeezed in a warm-up
this month in Cardiff for his vacant British
super-featherweight title clash against Willie
Limond in Glasgow on October 19, his opponent
has seen fit to do the same.
Limond is set to box Bulgarian Assen Vassilev
at the Thistle Hotel, Glasgow on September 6.
Aside from sustaining cuts, there is not a
great threat of Limond's clash with Arthur falling
apart.
Vassilev lost here by stoppage in five to
Matthew Hatton (March 2001) and in one to
Stephen Smith (July 2000), though this year
took former WBA lightweight champion Stefano
Zoff to points over six.

Cokes on mend
CURTIS COKES, former world welterweight
champion (1966-69), suffered a mild stroke and
is recovering in hospital.
Cokes, 65, is trainer to WBA heavyweight title
challenger Kirk Johnson.
