JOE CALZAGHE proved a hit as he overcame tough American Charles
Brewer in a shoot-out in Wales at the weekend, but on the same night

IWayne's new bid
WAYNE McCULLOUGH has reapplied for a Board
of Control licence and, if passed, will box in
Glasgow on June 8, when Scott Harrison
challenges Julio Pablo Chacon for the WBO
featherweight title at Kelvin Hall.
McCullough has repeatedly been denied a
licence in Britain since a medical query on his brain
scan was revealed several years ago. He has
subsequently been passed fit and boxed in Nevada.
Behind him is promoter Frank Warren, who said
the plan is for McCullough to challenge the Chacon-
Harrison winner.
"We've had Wayne looked at independently," said
Warren. "I wouldn't support anyone who has been
turned down by the Board, but we're satisfied with
the test results."
The same Glasgow bill will feature a vacant
British super-featherweight title clash between
unbeaten Scots Alex Arthur and Willie Limond.
Byrd grounded
ATTEMPTS this week by Chris Byrd to have
Lennox Lewis stripped of the IBF heavyweight
title failed.
The IBF rejected Byrd's appeal against a decision
to sanction Lewis' June 8 title defence against Mike
Tyson in Memphis, but ruled the winner must enter
into negotiations to defend against the Michigan
southpaw.
A deadline of August 8 has been set for purse bids
should respective promoters fail to reach an agreement.
Byrd is allowed to take a fight in the interim should
he choose to. He was represented at the hearing by
John Hornewer, who used to work with Lewis.
Witter latest
WORD from Don King's camp is the
DeMarcus Corley-Junior Witter WBO
light-welterweight title match for Manchester on
June 1 is being worked on, but nothing has been
confirmed. Frank Warren said he's had one
conversation with King about the fight and stories
about the match happening are premature.
FAST and hard-hitting, resurgent
heavyweight JEREMY WILLIAMS
scored his second one-round win
in a row when he leaped in with a
wicked left hook to the body to drop
DAVID BOSTICE slowly to the deck.
