Boxing News 1974 Memorabilia

THE fight that was supposed to settle the question of
supremacy between Alan Minter and Jan Magdziarz
in the end did nothing of the sort. Their final
eliminator for the British middleweight title,
scheduled for 12 rounds, ended after 1 min 20 sees of
the fourth when referee Harry Gibbs disqualified
both boxers for not giving of their best.

LARRY PAUL has always been a young
man in a hurry. It took him just eight
fights to become Britain's first-ever 11st
champion, and now, only eight fights
and 13 months later, he is poised to
make the Lonsdale Belt his own property
— provided he gets past tough
Antiguan Maurice Hope at Wolverhampton
Civic Hall on Tuesday, writes
Harry Mullan.

THE three home countries, England, Ireland and Scotland, performed well to bring home
12 medals — five of them gold — from the fifth international multi-nation tournament in
Holland.

IT IS perhaps a sign of the times in the amateurs, that one of the customarily
strongest division, light-middle, appears to have run short of significant talent in
recent years. Not so long ago, it saw the likes of Papp, Lagutin, Torma and
Benvenuti scramble for the title in major internationals, but since the Mexico
Olympics no new ring personality emerged to eclipse the greats of yesteryear.

WESTERN COUNTIES, 4-0 down at one stage, produced a
remarkable recovery to earn a 5-5 draw with the Western
District of Scotland on the Bristol Sportingi Club's opening
show of the season at the Grand Hotel.

ON A big fight night, three men usually get all the attention
the boxer, the trainer, and the manager. But there's a
fourth member of the team, whose contribution is just as
significant but who rarely shares the limelight  the
trainer's assistant, the acolyte with the bag, the bottle, and
the icepack. He might be the number two, the second fiddle,
but don't ever underrate his importance in the setup.
