Watson benefit night
ABENEFIT evening to raise money for Michael
Watson is to be promoted by Sports Network at the
Grosvenor House Hotel in London on July 8.
There will also be boxing, with the main event
expected to feature Junior Witter bidding to add the
vacant Commonwealth crown to the British he
collected recently

Arthur-Limond on
IT has been confirmed Alex Arthur and fellowunbeaten
Scot Willie Limond will box on June 8 in
Glasgow for the British super-featherweight title
vacated by Michael Gomez.
And if relicensed next week by the Boxing Board,
Wayne McCullough is to box on the undercard and
face the winner of Julio Pablo Chacon's WBO
featherweight title against Scott Harrison that tops the
bill in Glasgow.

SIXTEEN long years after destroying
Frank Bruno at Wembley, Tim
Witherspoon is still in a boxing ring.
But he looked old and ponderous as he
bulled his way to a boring 10-round verdict
over Ahmed Abdin at the Silver Star Hotel.
Scores were much too close at 96-94
twice, and even 97-93.
Witherspoon didn't do much, but tagged
the burly, balding Syrian with a good left hook
in the fifth and a cracking right in the sixth.
Yet he was impressive only in round six

Top of the class
• THE North West Counties ABA staged a "Sports
Leaders Award in Boxing" at the Department of
Exercise and Sports Science, Crewe and Alsager
Teacher Training College on April 27-28.
It was for prospective School Teachers and 20 students
participated.
The course was supported by Sportsmatch funding
with the assistance of Ergogenics (Boxing equipment).
The provision of this course is a major development
and concept by Paul King (North West Counties),
facilitated by Martin Ventre and Mick Macilwee.
Teaching administrator Veronica Parkinson said, "All
the participants thoroughly enjoyed the course and will
now seek to take the ABAE Assistants course next term as
part of their modules of teaching.
"This progression can only enhance the image of
amateur boxing within education."

Walton stands apart

JAMES BOYD may have been the bill-topper in Telford, but the show-stealer on an
excellent night was undoubtedly Donnington feather Shaun Walton.
The 27-year-old boxed from Randlay magnificently to outpoint former junior star Richard
Wyatt in a three-rounder that oozed class from start to finish.
The Lye fighter's corner were unhappy with the majority decision, though can have few
complaints. Walton gave a marvellous display of controlled aggression - the way he dipped
under punches and turned his opponent, particularly in the third, was a joy to watch.
Yet it had all started so brightly for Wyatt, who entered the ring in England colours. Shaun
kept busy, but was caught by a string of right counters. By the second, however, Walton had
found top gear and Richard clearly felt a heavy right.
Shaun found the same shot in the third — a session in which he attacked incessantly,
working Wyatt over to head and body.
Walton said: "I trained hard, very hard to do a number on Wyatt because of his
reputation."
He did just that.
