THE bust-up between Rodney Berman and the WBU at
the big Carnival City promotion earlier this month -
over whether Jake Matlala would or would not put his
light-flyweight title on the line in his farewell fight - has
led to a shift in allegiance to the IBO.
On April 17, Berman stages two IBO championship fights
with Cassius Baloyi fighting Tiger Ari of the Philippines for the
vacant super-featherweight title and Zolani Petelo challenging
light-flyweight champion Jose Garcia.
Berman was also scheduled to meet this week with promoter
Don King in New York in an attempt to find a way for Corrie
Sanders to enter the WBA heavyweight title picture.
It is believed Berman, who works with Lion Promotions
(Lennox Lewis' company), is hopeful a deal can be worked out
with King linked with the BBC.
The Beeb has a contract with Lion while King promotes
Howard Eastman and Danny Williams, who wants his fights
shown on terrestrial TV in Britain.
Berman wants Sanders to challenge John Ruiz in Carnival
City, but first the champion must take care of mandatory
challenger Kirk Johnson. That fight is being negotiated for
May 25.
Dean comeback delay
DEAN FRANCIS, former British and European supermiddleweight
champion, had to pull out of a
scheduled return in Northampton last Saturday because
of a chest infection.
Dean's comeback following three years out of the
game will now be against Mondili Mbonambi of South
Africa on the Audley Harrison show at Wembley
Conference Centre on April 20.
Nicky Cook's opponent on that card is South African
veteran Jackie Gunguluza who these days is no longer
highly rated. They meet over 12 for Cook's WBF Intercontinental
super-featherweight title.
Frank's bullish
FRANK MAL0NEY, enthusiastic manager of Scott
Harrison, is on a death wish - or is he?
First he tells me he'd bet his life on young Scott, the
British and Commonwealth featherweight champion,
beating Michael Brodie.
Then, after discussing his biography which is to be
published shortly, added: "If this doesn't sell a million
copies I'll shoot myself."
Lennox Lewis' former manager added: "Brodie withdrew
his nomination to fight for the European title rather
than box Scott, who's the best featherweight in the country,
including Naseem Hamed. What does that tell you?"
Frank promises to tell all in his book, though could
just be plugging it.
"This is going to shock people," he said. "It's going to
give the greatest ever insight into boxing."
Meanwhile, they say bad luck comes in threes, and
Maloney can believe it. His fighters Graham Earl, Martin
Power and Kevin Lear all have hand injuries and will be
out until the summer.
Frank has "parted on good terms" with light-heavy
Peter Haymer, who is still with trainer Chris Hall.
Akinwande left King?
•
LANKY heavyweight Henry Akinwande turned up
on the Kissimmee undercard and soon floored Curt
Paige with a big right hand.
Although the American got up, he was in no fit state to
continue. It was waved off at 2-53 of the first.
It was Akinwande's first outing since losing to Oliver
McCall, and that he was boxing for another promoter
suggests Don King may have decided to part with him.
