Phillips joins Leonard
HAVING failed to secure a rematch with Kostya Tszyu by
signing with the Australian's promoter Vlad Wharton,
the world light-welterweight champion's only conqueror,
American veteran Vince Phillips, has joined Sugar Ray
Leonard.
Phillips, a former IBF 10st king and now 38, split from
Warton after going to court. He claimed Warton had not
tried his best to get him a rematch with Tszyu.
Vince could still feature in intriguing matches against
Micky Ward (whom he has beaten) and Arturo Gatti.
first, though, Phillips, 44-6-1 (32), takes on Carlos
Wilfredo Vilches in Yakima, Washington on July 19.
"Vince wants to fight the best," said Leonard. "He's
getting better with age and is a rare breed of fighter."

Byron defends
BYRON MITCHELL is to defend his WBA supermiddleweight
crown against that organisation's
former middleweight champ Julio Cesar Green in Las
Vegas on July 27, when John Ruiz tackles Kirk
Johnson in the heavyweight main event (also for the
WBA crown).
A third title clash on the card features southpaw Tim
Austin putting his IBF bantam belt at stake against
Adan Vargas of Mexico.

Lewis sues Sanigar
CHRIS SANIGAR, who runs the successful Bristol Boys
camp, travelled to Memphis as a fan to watch Lennox
Lewis defend his world title against Mike Tyson.
Little did he know he would be served with a writ at
ringside by the heavyweight king, who is in dispute with
former promoter Panos Eliades.
The lawsuit against Sanigar is a claim for damages
exceeding $1m and alleges the Bristol manager and
trainer acted as a front man for Eliades, who in February
was ordered by a New York court to pay Lewis $7.2m for
"racketeering, fraud and breach of fiduciary duty".
In the lawsuit filed against Sanigar, Lewis claims the
terms of the February judgement had not been satisfied.
He also alleges Sanigar conspired with Eliades earlier
this year to sell video footage of Lennox's bouts to a
company in California and that the material could only
have been received from Panix Promotions.
Lewis will, of course, have to prove his allegations are
true. No hearing date has been set.

Holmes horror

AMATEUR boxing suffered a tragic
loss when ABA bantamweight finalist
FRED HOLMES drowned in a quarry near
Peterborough on June 1.
Holmes was diving into a man-made lake
at Eye Green - trying to cool down on a
scorching hot day - but failed to surface.
Friends raised the alarm, but although a
passer-by dived in to search for the boxer,
he could not be found.
His body was eventually located and
brought to the surface by two off-duty
policemen, both trained divers, who lived
locally. It is believed the boxer was snared
by the strong currents and very cold water.
Fred, boxing for Kingsthorpe Boys in
Northampton, had broken through to the top
ranks of the seniors this season.
He won the NACYP Class C 54 kgs title in
December, then in April reached the ABA
Senior final where he lost to Derry Mathews.
