Mullings found
PATRICK MULLINGS, the former British superbantamweight
champion who went missing after
he was stripped of the domestic belt last summer, has
been living in Peterborough.
For the past six weeks the southpaw has been
training under Kevin Sanders, preparing for a comeback
this summer.
This will follow a three-month suspension and
£500 fine handed out by the Board following a hearing
on April 10 relating to a positive drugs test on Mullings
following his points win over Michael Alldis.
Mullings denied the allegation he had taken
cocaine, the drug found in his system, but the Board
ruled against him.
"He's looking to resume his career," said Sanders.
"He wants a rematch with Alldis. Pat is weighing
about 9 1/2st and we have spoken with Dean Powell
at Lion Promotions.
"Hopefully, Alldis will give Pat a shot at the title.
Michael keeps saying Pat didn't deserve to win. They
should fight again to put everything to rest."
Hopkins v Harry?
WHO exactly will be next for world middleweight
champion Bernard Hopkins?
A match with Dariusz Michalczewski for the
German's WBO light-heavyweight title later this year is
fast becoming a possibility, but last week there was
talk of Hopkins defending his world titles in August
against new WBO 11st 6lbs king Harry Simon, who
dethroned Armand Krajnc in Copenhagen this month.
Everyone involved in negotiations for the
Michalczewski match is interested in the fight and for
it to take place in Germany.
But of course either a Simon win over Hopkins or
Joey DeGrandis toppling Michalczewski tomorrow
(April 20) would scupper those plans. DeGrandis is so
confident he is prepared to bet $100,000 the title
changes hands.
Hopkins-Simon would be for four belts and probably
take place in the United States. No fighter has ever
held WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO titles at the same
Bungu to return
VUYANI BUNGU'S crushing defeat by Naseem Hamed
in London was over two years ago, but the South
African, who hasn't boxed since and insists he never
announced his retirement, wants to fight again.
Bungu has held on to the money he made defending
the IBF super-bantamweight crown a record 13 times,
but boxing is in his blood and the 35-year-old has not
been able to find a fulfilling alternative.
Vuyani, one of the most successful ever South
African boxers, has at least kept himself in shape and
plans a few warm-up matches before contemplating a
major title challenge.
Rodney Berman, his old promoter, has announced his
willingness to give the former champion a trial test
before looking to match him in a title bout.
A fight between Bungu and compatriot Lehlo
Ledwaba is already being spoken about, while June or
July has been mentioned with regard to Vuyani's comeback
appearance.
