Rahman appeals
HAVING not yet seen Evander Holyfield's technical
decision over Hasim Rahman, I cannot offer a
comment on the outcome.
But Rahman, who lost the WBA heavyweight title
eliminator when suffering a huge swelling over an eye,
has filed a protest with the governing body over the
referee's handling and is appealing the decision.
Our US correspondent Jim Brady said Holyfield was
definitely naughty with his head.

Toomey reminder
IN an ideal world, every professional boxer who has
been in the game for a good length of time would
have a testimonial, as happens in football.
It doesn't mean testimonials for fighters do not
occur. After reading my piece on the Michael Watson
benefit evening in fi/Vtwo weeks ago (May 31), Hull
promoter Mick Toomey reminded me he had staged a
show recently for local Tony Booth, who has had more
than 100 fights and is still active.
The amount raised was not specified, but Toomey
said: "It was a lot more than he'd have got for a smack
in the eye."

Where for Wayne?
CONTRARY to reports from Puerto Rico that Britain's
Wayne Alexander will have to travel to the
Caribbean for his WBO light-middleweight title
challenge to Daniel Santos on July 20, the venue has
yet to be decided.
Puerto Rican sources said Alexander will be fighting
in Bayamon, but Frank Warren, who won the purse bids
and presumably will be looking for home advantage for
the Londoner, is considering an offer from Santos'
camp to buy the promotional rights.
Santos, though also under contract to Sports Network,
has clearly signalled his intention not to renew his deal
with Warren when it expires after two more fights.
Meanwhile, Alexander is certain to vacate his
European title, what with Danish promoter Mogens
Palle having won the purse bids for him to defend
against Mikael Rask on July 19.

Cory breaks free
CORY SPINKS, the world-ranked welterweight, has
paid an unspecified sum to break away from
promoters Top Rank and become a free agent.
The son of Leon is threatening a move up to lightmiddleweight
and would like to fight Kassim Ouma.

BRADLEY BOMBS BUCKLEY
IT'S not often the great centurion PETER BUCKLEY gets stopped, even when matched out of his league
as he was against Newbridge's much-improved BRADLEY PRYCE over six-threes at the Braehead.
But the 33-year-old Midlander, in his 184th fight, was dropped three times and rescued in just 70 seconds
of the first by referee Victor Loughlin.
Buckley, from Birmingham, shook his head almost in disbelief.
Pryce (10st 3 1/4lbs) is now 16-0 (10) and Buckley sidelined for 28 days. He didn't take a beating, but was
dropped from a jab inside 30 seconds and a right soon after.
Each time Buckley (10st 11b) rose quickly, though it was noticeable how the second knockdown hurt him far
more than the first.
Bradley was not in the mood to hang around and raced after Buckley, flooring him a third time with a quick
flurry, and it was halted straight away.
It was a rematch. In January 2000 in Manchester, Pryce had scored a 40-36 four-round points win.

DARKIE SMITH, father of good light-welterweight Stephen, raised a valid
point which didn't go completely amiss at t h e MEN Arena on June 1.
He asked why Sky TV didn't interview the winner of the controversial Ruben
Groenewald-Anthony Farnell WBU middleweight title fight.
It was loser Farnell who gave his opinion, while the brave South African was
left to return to his dressing room.
"It would be nice if TV went back to the way it always used to be - talking to
the winner," he said. "It leaves a bad taste in my mouth when it seems they're
only interested in certain boxers.
"Build them up, maybe, but at least interview the winner on the night."
Smith praised Groenewald and Kevin Lear, who beat Michael Gomez at
super-feather on the same bill, for springing upsets he feels his son would also
produce given a shot at either Ricky Hatton or Colin Dunne.
Darkie said he had been trying in vain for months to secure a fight with
Dunne but that when his efforts came to nothing they decided to box for the
vacant IBC belt at light-welter.
