Ruiz-Jones closer
APPARENTLY Roy Jones has agreed in writing to
sign to box John Ruiz for the WBA heavyweight
title early next year.
If Jones is willing to sign a document saying he
will sign a contract, why not just sign the contract?
Jones was quoted in USA Today as saying: "They
call me reluctant, but how do they like me now?"
This suggests strongly he is going to take the
one-off fight at heavyweight.
Jones asked for a guarantee of $10m and Ruiz,
so eager to box him, has accepted all the lightheavy's
financial demands and the smaller share.
Ruiz's fee will be calculated from pay-per-view
sales, but all revenues will be split 60-40 in Jones'
favour. Norman Stone, Ruiz's manager, said: "We've
agreed to all Jones' terms. Now we'll see if he wants
the fight."
Cat ley must travel
GLENN CATLEY has to return to Germany for his
European super-middleweight title rematch
against Danilo Haeussler.
Catley was narrowly outpointed by the German in
Frankfurt (Oder) in March, but the EBU ordered a
return because of the protest over the scoring.
Catley's manager Chris Sanigar agreed terms with
Haeussler's promoter Wilfried Sauerland to go back
to Germany some time before the end of the year.
Though Catley is being well paid, Sanigar realises
his man will probably need a knockout to win.
Forrest boost
THE world's best welterweight, American Vernon
Forrest, has agreed a multi-fight deal with US
cable TV network HBO.
And the result of the recently-agreed deal is likely
to be a WBC title defence in hometown Atlanta.
Forrest is being primed to top the bill there on
January 25 with Vassiliy Jirov defending his IBF
cruiserweight crown against James Toney on the
same card.
No challenger has been named for Forrest, double
winner this year over Shane Mosley, who is badly in
need of a victory before taking on Oscar De La Hoya
next year.
Mosley appears to have accepted that is a smart
move - remember he took on Forrest again without a
warm-up - and the De La Hoya rematch is now
unlikely to happen until around May.
Tyson divorce fight
MIKE TYSON is heading to court again to sort out
a divorce settlement with second wife Monica
Turner.
Turner, a paediatrician, sued Tyson for divorce in
January, accusing him of adultery.
But Tyson is contesting the $10m settlement on
the grounds the contract was made invalid because
Turner's brother drew it up and is presently the
Republican candidate for the post of lieutenant governor
in Maryland.
Tyson's lawyers challenged the agreement when
Turner, who has retained their $4m home and custody
of children Rayna and Amir, last month attempted to
have the boxer meet his first instalment deadline.
He had reportedly paid only $1m of $5m owed by
the end of July.
With Tyson's team saying the contract is not
enforceable, both parties must return for a further
two-day hearing on December 16.
Tyson will not box again until next year. A venue is
being sought for his 10-rounder with Clifford Etienne,
the latest proposal coming from Sacramento with
February 15 the working date.
