IT was inevitable OSCAR DE LA HOYA and FERNANDO
VARGAS, both of whom train in Big Bear, California,
would cross paths long before they are scheduled to
meet in Las Vegas on September 14.
Such an occasion occurred a few weeks ago, whilst both
were out running in the morning.
That must have brought memories flooding back for Vargas,
whose hatred for De La Hoya stems from an incident years
ago when Fernando was an aspiring amateur and Oscar a
hot-shot pro.

UNBEATEN Miguel Cotto could be on his way to
becoming the next great Hispanic fighter as he
erupted with a fierce left hook to the body to
leave Mexico's tough Carlos Ramirez down and out
at 2-34 of the third at the Lucky Star Casino.
Cotto, who has such poise after just 11 pro fights,
conjured up memories of Jose Torres with his fast hands
and modified "Peek-a-Boo" defence, yet also moves and
punches with the regal majesty of Julio Cesar Chavez.
"I try not to let the pressure get to me," says the
handsome light-welter, who won his 11th straight, ninth
inside, in what was a 10-rounder.

MOST surprising gold medallist in Manchester was Welsh lightweight JAMIE
ARTHUR, who had been nobody's idea of a favourite before the tournament.
The 22-year-old, with the Coed Eva club, was one of only two champions who had
to box five times for a title. (Pakistani feather Haider Ali was the other. Darren Barker
had a walkover, otherwise he would have done it as well).
To win, nice-guy Jamie had to come through debateable decisions and injuries
which might have deflected lesser men.
In the semis he suffered a cut on the nose which caused concern, but as he
explained, "It was 'super-glued' yesterday [the rest day between the semi and final]
and to be honest I haven't seen it yet.
