Braithwaite in Rome
THE vacant WBC cruiserweight title will be contested by
dangerous Guyanese Wayne Braithwaite and Italian
Vincenzo Cantatore in Rome on June 1.
Purse bids were avoided when Vlad Wharton, who
manages world light-welterweight champ Kostya Tszyu,
and Salvatore Cherchi agreed terms.
Braithwaite is unbeaten in 17 and Cantatore 27-2. The
title was given up by Cuban Juan Carlos Gomez, who is now
boxing as a heavyweight.
Forrest gets tough
IT appears Shane Mosley's continual claims his defeat by
Vernon Forrest in January resulted more from butts than
his opponent's fists has wound up the new WBC welterweight
champion.
Now Forrest is insisting a rematch is not going to happen
unless he gets a 60 per cent share of the purse.
"I'm fed up with Shane's complaining," he said. "I had a
lot of respect for the way he took defeat on the night, but
now he's sounding like a sore loser.
"He didn't hand me the title. I beat him."
TWO leading Irish boxers are demanding showdowns
with the new Ulster senior champions for places in
Northern Ireland's squad at the Commonwealth Games in
Manchester from July 26-August 3, writes THOMAS MYLER.
Newry middleweight Martin Mallon, a 28-24 loser to Conall Carmichael of
Belfast's Holty Trinity BC in the recent championships final, feels the closeness
of the contest merits a return.
Seamus McCormick, Mallon's coach at the Sacred Heart BC, says: "It was a
great fight and there was nothing between them at the finish. We want a boxoff
to see who goes to the Games.
"If Carmichael had lost, I'm sure they would have wanted a box-off, so I
hope the Ulster Council will give us another chance."
Irish light-middle champion John Duddy of Derry's Ring BC missed the Ulster
Seniors because of 'flu and wants a deciding bout against new champion Ger
McAuley (Star, Belfast) to prove who is Northern Ireland's No. 1.
McAuley says he does not see the point of having to prove his right for
Commonwealth consideration.
