PAZ GETS HIS WISH
MORE than four years ago American VINNY PAZ was soundly outboxed by Herol
Graham at Wembley Arena.
Herol is now retired, whereas Paz, one away from his 50th win, challenges WBC
super-middleweight champion ERIC LUCAS on March 1.
The match, a dream one for Paz, is likely to take place in Connecticut, where
veteran Vinny is extremely popular. The American is 49-9 and has won 'world' titles
at lightweight and light-middle.
These days any fighter rated in the top 30 can box for the title so long as he is
approved by the WBC's executive committee. Paz is ranked No. 23.
Couch reply
JANE COUCH sent me an email just before Christmas having just read the
report of her last fight in our double issue.
"Tell Gareth [Jones] to check his facts," she said. "You can tell he hates
women's boxing. The newsmen and cameras were there at the end of the
fight not because women's boxing is a novelty.
"Me and Darren Dorrington worked hard to make sure the show was a
success. We'd done local charity things promoting boxing, not women's
boxing.
"I was still collecting money (for tickets] on the day of the fight The
crowd was not there for novelty value. They were my friends, workmates and
people who respect boxing and see the hours of hard work I put into my
career."
Jane finished her message by saying she probably didn't get paid as
much to fight as Gareth did for writing the article.
I think Jane ought to check her facts there, but she added: "Tell Gareth
I'm going home to Fleetwood for Christmas and back in training on January
2. Ifs the first time I've seen my family in 10 months."
lightweight belt against Kevin Toomey, then knocked out
Steve Tuckett, who was looked upon as though he was
going to be something, in the fifth to win the Area lightwelter
title. He still held that when he retired.
In the finish, the Board pulled the plug after a scan
showed an irregularity, otherwise he'd have had a few
more. And don't forget he had three full years out [Dec
1993-Dec '96], then made a comeback.
Above all, he was a marvellous person, a man of very
strong character. Out celebrating, he was always liable to
get locked up, because he were a right laugh. Today, he
owns his own hairdressing shops, drives a top-of-therange
Merc and recently passed the professional referee's
course in record time.
MATTHEW GRAINGER naturally got very upset we put it to him his boxing career
was over at 25.
Grainger (Woking) is English ABA super-heavyweight champion of 2001 but, of
course, that division no longer exists according to those who must be obeyed at AIBA.
We rang Grainger and he thought the new ruling no-one over 95 kgs (about 14st
13lbs) could box was that all competitors from 95 kgs upwards would now be called
heavyweights - that they were simply doing away with the super-heavy tag "like they
do in the pros".
