JOE MESI, the Buffalo, New York heavyweight
hope we featured in our January
18 issue, has caught the eye of former
world champion Sugar Ray Leonard, now
a promoter.
Leonard has signed the undefeated Mesi,
21-0, to a four-fight deal to probably start on
April 5 in his home state, possibly against
Ross Puritty, the only man to have defeated
WBO champion Wladimir Klitschko.
Leonard has a TV deal with ESPN in the
States and has promised Mesi four televised
fights.
AMATEUR stars CARL FROCH, World middleweight
bronze medallist, and MATTHEW THIRLWALL,
ABA light-middleweight champion, are turning
pro at York Hall, Bethnal Green on March 16.
The BBC are expected to show highlights on Sunday
Grandstand the following day.
Both have signed promotional deals with Panos Eliades and
are being trained in Hackney by former WBC middleweight
title challenger Robert McCracken.
In addition to the debuts of the two bright prospects, the
show will feature in the main event Sheffield's RYAN RHODES
- who has joined Eliades - boxing for the WBF middleweight
title vacated by Lester Jacobs, plus two quality Southern Area
title bouts.
HARLOW favourite STEVE MURRAY faces a minor risk when
he takes on experienced Russian VIKTOR BARANOV for the
ever-vacant WBO Inter-Continental lightweight title on the Oakey bill.
Murray starts favourite, especially with Baranov stepping down
in weight, but the visitor may just have the kind of flighty style to
pose the puncher serious problems in this 12-rounder.
Viktor is nimble and busy and has, of course, been in with plenty
of good fighters. The Russian clinched a repeat points win over
Mancunian Chris Barnett last time out (December) and, in fact, his
last five fights have all been on these shores.
