MONDAY, June 27 at Atlantic City.
That's the date and site of the heavyweight
super fight between undefeated champion
Mike Tyson and unbeaten challenger
Michael Spinks.
New York property mogul Donald
Trump secured the fight with a record site
fee of 11 million dollars, far in excess of
the reputed seven million dollars paid by
Caesars Palace, Las Vegas to stage the
middleweight title fight between Sugar
Ray Leonard and Marvelous Marvin
Hagler last April.
STEVE BOYLE, in front of his home town supporters at
the Scottish Exhibition Centre, became the fifth Scotsman
to win the British lightweight title in the last 20 years when
he crushed champion and pre-fight odds-on favourite Alex
Dickson after 25 seconds of the second with a big left hand.
It was a sudden ending to a fight that both expected to be
long, hard and gruelling. Dickson was hoping to go on past
Boyle to win a Lonsdale Belt and challenge for European
honours. But Boyle, having been stopped by Tony Willis in
nine rounds nearly two years ago in his first title challenge,
has upset the plans and now fills his shoes.
CAMDEN Town super-featherweight Jim McDonnell
made a successful return to the ring after a nine month
absence when he clearly outpointed Rafael Gandarilla of
Texas in the 10-round main event at York Hall.
A broken jaw suffered in sparring had kept McDonnell
out of the ring since May 1987, and, not surprisingly, the
Londoner was cautious in the first couple of rounds.
