HEROL "BOMBER" GRAHAM confirmed his position
as Britain's number one middleweight when he retained his
national 11st 61bs title with an utterly convincing fifth round
stoppage of challenger Johnny Melfah at the York Hall.
A difference in class and experience was never more
apparent as the southpaw champion from Sheffield completely
outboxed his limited Gloucester challenger, eventually
punching him (literally) to a standstill. Referee John
Coyle made an excellently-timed intervention, jumping
between them as Melfah was pinned in a neutral corner with
Graham beginning to unload.
RAYLEIGH'S former British light-heavyweight title challenger
John Moody overcame the early attacks of Fulham's
Tenko Ernie to come back and score a knock out in the fifth
of their eight round main event at the Festival Hall.
It was Moody's first fight in 16 months and although he
didn't look 100 per cent fit, his greater punching power
prevailed in the end.
AGE SEEMS to be no barrier to some fighters. Just one
week before his 39th birthday, Betulio Gonzales appeared
in Maracaibo, and stopped Pedro Nieves in four rounds.
Nieves was rated No. 4 in the Venezuelan light-flyweight
ratings, so he was no set up. Now Betulio is rated No. 2
challenger for the vacant title, and could be a champion
again, at 40. This was the second fight of his comeback,
after six years out of the ring.
DANIEL ZARAGOZA of Mexico retained his WBC
super-bantamweight title by knocking out Italian challenger
Valerio Nati in the fifth of their scheduled 12 rounder.
One perfect left hand to the point of Nati's jaw soon after
the start of round five put the Italian down heavily. He
managed to drag himself up onto his knees, but was counted
out by British referee Larry
O'Connell.
