BRITAIN'S most over-hyped and overpaid fight in history proved only
what was obvious before the event: that boxing is a young man's game,
and that the ancient and ill-conditioned Joe Bugner, at 37, had no
realistic chance of upsetting the 11-year younger Frank Bruno.
It took Bruno eight rounds to make the point, though, referee John
Coyle rescuing the veteran as the bell ended the round. The towel had
also been thrown in by Bugner's cornermen, but that f o rm of retirement
is not accepted in this country.

FORMER British light-welterweight champion Tony
Laing came back f r om a disastrous European title failure to
annex the vacant Commonwealth title with an 11th round
injury stoppage of the brave and competent Zambian
David Chibuye.

FORMER Central Area featherweight champion Les
Walsh was stopped in the seventh round of his " rubber"
clash with Mike Whalley at the New Century Hall and then
announced his retirement from the ring.
Walsh finishes with 27 professional contests, a record as a
great crowd-pleaser, and as a man with a heart as big as a
bucket.

VETERAN Fat Cowdell rediscovered his youth at an emotionfilled
Aston Villa Leisure Centre, surviving a heart-stopping first
round to grind the resistance out of British super-featherweight
champion Najib Daho.
The 34-year-old from Warley regained the title he had lost to
Daho in a sensational one-round upset in May 1986.

ROBERT " B AM BAM" HINES, the Philadelphia southpaw,
won the vacant United States Boxing Association
light-middlewight title as he outclassed and overpowered
Tony Montgomery of Detroit in the 10th of their scheduled
12-rounder at Resorts International casino hotel.
