LLOYD HONEYGHAN would be justified if he expected to
make an easy defence of his WBC welterweight title against Gene
Hatcher in Marbella tomorrow (Saturday, August 29).
Certainly it looks almost certain to be a doddle after his battle
against Maurice Blocker in his second defence. In Blocker,
Honeyghan faced a young, unbeaten boxer who was a genuine l0st
71b man. He had an accordingly tough battle.
Hatcher, 28, is a former WBA champion but at the 10 st
poundage. Furthermore, he comes to his opportunity at full
welterweight after a defeat in his last fight against a leading
leading-welterweight contender, Frankie Warren. If that sounds
crazy, it probably is
BONFIRES were lit on the highest ridges
overlooking the Rhondda Valley.
And thousands of men and women crowded
around wireless sets well into the small hours of
a warm August night.
It was 1937 and they gathered to hear how
Tommy Farr, who had grown up among them,
was looking after himself against the new
young heavyweight champion of the world, Joe
Louis, 3,000 miles away in New York City's
fabled Yankee Stadium.
THE cruiserweight division has been established now for eight years and finally seems to
have found a champion to give it respectability in Evander Holyfield.
However, all the signs are that Evander is only passing through on his way to Mike
Tyson, and may not stop long.
When Evander does move on, it will leave the division with only Carlos De Leon to carry
the flag, and although the Puerto Rican has ruled the WBC roost for the best part of seven
years, his habit of loaning his title out to challengers such as S. T. Gordon and Alfonzo
Ratliff has dented his reputation.
MARK BRELAND blew a million-dollar
unification match with Lloyd Honeyghan
when he was sensationally knocked out in
the 11th round by the tough and far more
experienced Marlon Starling.
Breland, the World Boxing Association
champion, was leading on all three judges'
cards going into the 11th. However, the
previously undefeated former Olympic gold
medallist seemed to have been tiring since the
eighth.
