TERRY MARSH for so long an unfashionable
fighter, got his chance to win a world
title in a circus tent in his home town of
Basildon in March. In front of him was the
IBF light-welterweight champion, Joe
Louis Manley of Detroit.
LEEDS puncher Tom Collins began the year as just another
contender and ended it as European light-heavyweitht
champion. In between, on March 11 at the Albert Hall, the
experienced Yorkshireman won the British crown in a war
with John Moody from Essex.
It was a battle of fierce intensity, with all the hallmarks of
a great fight, swinging first one way then the next.
JOY SHOWS on Charlie Magri's face as he
holds aloft the Lonsdale Belt which the Board
presented to him in a touching ceremony
recently. The best part of it for Charlie was that
he didn't have to take a single punch on the nose
to win it outright.
DONNY LALONDE'S right hand has finally made him a
world champion. That must seen funny to Donny as for
years people had been saying that the handsome Canadian
was a one-handed fighter who would never make a real
impact until he stopped relying on his right and developed his
left hand.
