BIRMINGHAM'S stylish Lloyd Hibbert gave hope
to under-valued provincials everywhere by taking the British and
Commonwealth light-middleweight titles on a desperately close
12 rounds points verdict over "house favourite" Nick Wilshire at the Albert Hall.
IN a battle of great intensity black Yorkshireman Tom Collins
regained the (vacant) British light-heavyweight title with a 10th
round stoppage of aspiring John Moody.
What began as a classic boxer versus fighter confrontation
turned into a ferocious, punch-for-punch battle of attrition as
Collins was forced to abandon his elegant left hand work in favour
of blasting swings just in order to survive against Moody's
onslaught.
IT was like turning back the pages of the years watching
Howard Davis box rings round Othal "Choo Choo" Dixon
on cable TV from Atlantic City.
Davis is 31 but insists he has "the metabolism of a young
kid". And against Dixon, a short, swarming black slugger,
Davis showed the speed and reflexes of a much younger
fighter.
THE O V E R A L L poor standard London finals were tailed
off with excitement and drama in t h e last t h r e e bouts at the
Albert Hall — each involving England first string internationals
who were the winners.
The excitement came at light-heavyweight with the
question again being posed afterwards: Why did John
Beckles have to get involved in such a battle to take the
title?
Fairbairn s world-rated 1985 A B A champion, who had a
war with Middle Row's Terry Dixon in t h e semi-finals was
once more forced to pull out all the stops against relative
novice Errol Guthrie of Lynn.
WITH eight winners, a very strong Midland Counties
took the honours in the A B A quarter finals at the
Festival Hall, highlighted by impressive wins for
Richard Joyce and Steve Gibbons. Home Counties got
three winners, Eastern Counties one with the Southern
Counties drawing a blank sheet with the much fancied
Tony Bush losing (to Joyce), writes D A V I D PRIOR.
In t h e light-welter division, 20-year-old Joyce (Burton
ABC) turned in a career best performance when
outpointing England international and Wembley
favourite for the title Bush (Crawley ABC). Bush, on
the attack from the bell, shaded the first with the
southpaw Joyce boxing cleverly on the defensive.
