UNDEFEATED former ABA featherweight champion Paul Hodkinson of Kirkby tops a
bill for the first time in his short pro career when he meets Barnet's Southern Area 9st title
holder John Maloney over eight threes in a match made at 9st 61bs at the York Hall on
Thursday.
Exciting hooker Hodkinson, who fights out of the Barney Eastwood camp, has won all of
his five pro fights inside schedule, including an impressive fifth-round kayo of former
British champion Steve Sims in his last outing last month.
There is no doubting Hodkinson's potential, but in Maloney he faces a rugged,
hard-hitting individual who always comes to fight and has met some stiff opposition.
Maloney won the Southern Area crown with a blistering first-round stoppage of Gary
Nickels last March and he holds a three-round kayo victory over ex-ABA champ and
Olympic representative Kevin Taylor, gained in February 1985.
LLOYD HONEYGHAN embarks on the first of what will probably be a
line of successful defences of his world welterweight titles when he takes on
former WBA light-welterweight champion and IBF No. 1 challenger
Johnny Bumphus of Tacoma, Washington, at the Grand Hall, Wembley
Conference Centre on Sunday.
EVANDER HOLYFIELD retained his World Boxing
Association cruiserweight title by overwhelming Henry
Tillman in the seventh round at Bally's Grand Hotel in a
clash of former Olympic team-mates.
What many thought would be a good competitive fight
instead became a rout as the powerful, relentless Holyfield
floored Tillman in the second and then dominated before
sending the challenger to the floor three times in the
seventh.
